His father is Gilbert, and his mother, Ruby Moore Hardy. Jeff grew up with his older brother, Matt Hardy. Young Jeff lost his mother to brain cancer when he was just nine years old.

He has been looked after by his father ever since the passing of his mother. Jeff Hardy used to work on a tobacco farm to sustain the needs of his family.

Jeff Hardy made a debut for Ring of Honor Wrestling debut in early 2003. A year later, in 2004, WWE conducted a drug test, and Hardy came positive.
