Notably, he is the first head football coach to secure victories in both the college football national championship and the Super Bowl.

From 1979 to 1988, he served as a head football coach at the collegiate level. He achieved notable success with the University of Miami, including a victory in the 1988 Orange Bowl.

Transitioning to the NFL, Johnson became the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys in 1989. He led the team to consecutive Super Bowl titles in 1992 and 1993.

Johnson was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2012 and the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2020.
