Julia Goerges: Early Life, Family, and Education

Goerges was born in Bad Oldesloe, a town in then-West Germany. Klaus Goerges and Inge Goerges are her parents.

The Goerges couple works for an insurance company. Besides, Maike is her elder maternal half-sister. Notably, Mailke also serves in insurance.

Julie went to the Klaus Groth Schule and Theodor Mommsen Schule. Both were the middle schools in Bad Oldesloe. She completed the Mittlere Reife diploma in 2005.

Her tennis journey began at the early age of five. Idolizing Martina Hingis, she was coached by Sascha Nensel, who coached her until 2015.

Julia Goerges: Career

International Tennis Federation Women’s Circuit

Goerges joined the ITF Women’s Circuit in 2005, which marked the start of her professional career. In the first season, she took part in seven tournaments.

However, she had to bow out from the first round of five of them. Not a debut season, she expected!

The 2006 season brought her success as she won the Wahlstedt and Bielefeld tournaments. Her first main draw appearances in WTA Tour were in 2007.

Later, Jelena Jankovic defeated her in the first round of Wimbledon in the same year, 2009. Before that, she was eliminated from the third round of the US Open and the Istanbul Cup.

Notably, she was able to make her way into the semifinals of the Bell Challenge.

First WTA title

In the 2010 Australian Open, she lost to Caroline Wozniacki in the second round. Besides, Maria Sharapova defeated her in the quarterfinals of the 2010 Internationaux de Strasbourg.

Inside the top 25

Goerges made progress at the 2011 Australian Open as she reached the third round. With Germany, she defeated Masa Zec Peskiric of Slovenia at the Fed Cup.

Notably, she won the first Premier-level tournament of her career, playing at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix.

She had defeated the No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki in the final of the competition. She could not make it past the third round at all of the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open.

This win regained her spot in the top 20. Moreover, she won the WTA Elite Trophy in the same year defeating CoCo Vandeweghe in the final.

In early 2018, Goerges bagged the ASB Classic title. After the Australian Open campaign, she saw herself in the top 10 list.
