Mamadou N’Diaye | Early Life, Family & Education

Mamadou N’Diaye was born on September 14th, 1993, in Dakar, Senegal, to Mbad N’Diaye and Seynabou N’Diaye. 

Likewise, Mamadou is not the only child in the family as he has an older sibling named Adam.

Initially, Mamadou played soccer and started playing basketball much later.

In 2010, Amadou Koundoul, assistant coach for the UC Irvine’s basketball team, saw Mamadou play a pick-up game at Dakar and asked him to come to the United States.

Although Mamadou didn’t know how to speak English, he still accepted the offer and reached the US. Likewise, M’Diaye had trouble communicating in English, and for him to understand, things had to be translated to French.

According to the doctor, Mamadou’s headaches were caused due to a golf ball-sized tumor in his pituitary gland.

During an interview, he recalled the moment and stated that it was not a big deal for him as he didn’t know what tumor meant.

But once he found out, he had a tough time accepting that he was suffering from a tumor.

High School Career

During Mamadou’s high school years, he ended his junior season with an average of 14 rebounds and 24 points.

According to CBS News, N’Diaye was impossible to defend because of his impressive height. 

Moreover, during Mamadou’s senior season while representing Brethren Christian, his average was 4.5 blocks, 27 points, and 14 rebounds.

N’Diaye’s highest-scoring game was in January 2013 while plying against Oxford Academy, where he recorded 45 points and 15 rebounds.

After a year, Mamadou received All-State honors and CIF-5AA Player of the Year honors.

On November 2nd, 2013, Mamadou represented UC Irvine for the first time during an exhibition game against Chapman.

He recorded nine points, a team-high, five blocks, and seven rebounds.

Nonetheless, after the game head coach stated that he was delighted with Mamadou’s performance. He considered N’Diaye’s height a dominating factor.

During the game, N’Diaye recorded a career-high 12 rebounds, 12 points, four blocks.

Furthermore, during his Junior year, he decided to participate in the 2015 NBA Draft. However, UC Irvine released a statement saying that N’Diaye is happy in school and is committed to complete his education, and thus, he will forgo the 2015 NBA Draft. 

After his second season with the UC Irvine’s Anteaters, CBSSports.com stated that he should play in the NBA Development League before joining the NBA.
