Matt Strahm | Early Life, Family, and Education

Matthew Scott Strahm, also known as Matt Strahm, was born on November 12, 1991, in West Fargo, North Dakota, USA.

He was born to parents Tim Strahm and Linda Strahm. Along with his parents Matt grew up with his two siblings Britta Strahm (older sister) and Benjamin Strahm (younger brother).

Interestingly, his younger brother Benjamin, shortly Ben, is also a baseball player. He played college baseball at Northeastern State University and Cowley Community College.

Later in 2018, the San Francisco Giants signed a contract with him. Likewise, Matt’s sister Britta is also very passionate about the sport though she does not play baseball.

Additionally, Strahm grew up as a Minnesota Twins fan.

Strahm started his amateur career at West Fargo High School in North Dakota, where he was the school team’s pitcher.

During his time at West Fargo High school, Matt Strahm played for the school’s baseball team as a pitcher. Besides, the school considered him to be the third-best pitcher on his team. 

Furthermore, while he attended a tryout at the University of Kansas, a coach from the college baseball team of Neosho County Community College caught his attention.

Shortly afterward, Matt joined Neosho and recorded nine wins and three losses in 2012.

Also, he scored a 1.48 earned run average (ERA) and helped the Neosho County Panthers reach the 2012 National Junior College Athletic Association World Series (NJCAA World Series)

However, after two seasons with Neosho County, he decided to transfer to the University of Nebraska–Lincoln.

Kansas City Royals

2012-2015

Further, in the 2012 MLB draft, the Kansas City Royals drafted Matt Strahm in the 21st round, with the 643rd overall selection.

Rather than transferring to Nebraska, Strahm signed a contract with the Royals and received $100 thousand as a signing bonus.

During the 2013 season, Matt made his professional debut appearance with the Royals’ minor league affiliate team, Idaho Falls Chukars of the Pioneer League.

In the middle of the 2013 season, Strahm underwent ulnar ligament collateral ligament reconstruction, also known as Tommy John surgery, to repair damage to the ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow.

As a result of his injury, Strahm missed most of the 2014 season, recording only ​19 1⁄3 throws/innings for Idaho Falls. 

Similarly, in the 2015 season, he pitched for the Class-A affiliate team named Lexington Legends of the South Atlantic League (SAL).

Later in the same season, he also pitched for the Class-A Advanced affiliate team called Wilmington Blue Rocks of the Carolina League

2016 – 2017

Strahm started the 2016 season with the Royals’ Double-A affiliate team named Northwest Arkansas Naturals of the Texas League, despite being on the 40-man roster.

He had a record of 3.43 ERA and 107 strikeouts in ​102 1⁄3 innings pitched through the end of July.

Further, a team member, Wade Davis, went on the disabled list, but luckily for Matt, the Royals promoted him to the major leagues on July 31, 2016. And that day, Strahm made his major league debut.

Despite the fact that Strahm played most of his minor league games as a starting pitcher, Kansas City Royals positioned Strahm as a relief pitcher for the rest of the 2016 season.

The Royals did so in order to not increase the number of innings thrown from the 2015 season by too many.

Moreover, Kansas City Royals announced at the end of the 2016 season that Strahm would compete for a spot in their starting rotation during spring training in 2017.

However, the Royals’ manager announced at the start of spring training, after acquiring Nate KarnsTravis Wood, and Jason HammelNed Yost, that Strahm would be a reliever in 2017.

In addition, he appeared in 24 games for the Royals, out of which he started three games in 2017. Unfortunately, he ended the 2017 season after suffering a torn patellar tendon in his left knee.

San Diego Padres

Besides, the Kansas City Royals traded Strahm, Travis Wood, and Esteury Ruiz to the San Diego Padres on July 24, 2017.

They were traded in exchange for Trevor Cahill, Ryan Buchter, and Brandon Maurer.

Further, Matt had a record of 2.05 ERA in 41 games and five starts in 2018, including 69 strikeouts in ​61 1⁄3 innings.
