Moreover, in 2013, at super featherweight, Oscar fought six times and won all the bouts. He recorded eight wins with no defeats and all by stoppage by the end of the year.

Featherweight Division 

Oscar returned to the featherweight division for the first time after nine fights on 26th July. He claimed the vacant NABF Junior featherweight title in an eight-round unanimous decision win against Juan Ruiz. 

Moreover, Oscar secured a defense of the NABF Junior super featherweight title in November against another Mexican boxer Alberto Garza.

He retained the title through a technical knockout during round seven.

He claimed his career-first world title with a second-round stoppage win over Matias and claimed the vacant WBO Championship.

The fight became a one-sided fight, as Oscar halted Osawa during round seven after he hurt him with a hook, and the referee had to stop the fight.

Likewise, on 17th February 2017, Top Rank announced that Oscar would be making a mandatory defense of his WBO featherweight title against Miguel Marriaga, former WBA ‘Super’ World featherweight title challenger 22nd April 2017.

Oscar retained his title in front of 5,419 fans in a slugfest through a decision victory. Many at ringside considered that the scores did not do Miguel any justice.

Third Title Defense

In July 2017, Oscar made the third defense of his WBO title. His manager Frank Espinoza stated that he was back in training.

It was reported that he would be fighting Genesis Servania, an unbeaten Filipino boxer at the Tucson Convention Center co-featuring Gilberto Ramírez.

Moreover, Oscar stated that he would like to join the division and fight Abner Mares and Leo Santa Cruz, likely to occur in 2017.

The fight took place in front of a crowd of 4,103, where Oscar managed to recover from a knockdown and add a knockdown of his own.

Thus, retaining his WBO title through a unanimous decision after 12 rounds.

During the post-fight interview, Valdez stated that,

“I never imagined I was going be on the ring like that. But this is boxing. To be quite honest, I wasn’t actually hurt. I was just very surprised… ‘OK, I’m on the floor. But now, I’m going to get up and do my work.”

Fourth Title Defense 

Valdez was planning to come back to fight in February 2018 and appear in at least three matches.

According to RingTV, Oscar made another defense against his title at the StubHub Center in Carson, California, on 10th March 2018.

While weighing Quigg overweighed by three pounds, the California State Athletic Commission fined him 20% off his $100,000. Oscar received half of the fine money.

The fight was a 12 round match, where Oscar broke Scott’s nose, and as a result, his front teeth were damaged. Valdez successfully retained his title, and the whole fight had an average of 1.1 million viewers on ESPN.

Change in Trainer

There was an announcement on 13th August 2018, where it was stated that Oscar has left his longtime trainer Manny Robles and will be training under Eddy Reynoso, who is famously known for training Canelo Alvarez.

The main reasons for the change were to tighten Oscar’s defenses as he was frequently involved in slugfests. Reportedly, Valdez was trying to make a return at the Mexico City Arena on 12th January 2019.
