Robert Saleh’s journey in the NFL is no less than a dream that came into reality due to an incident that all began with his brother, David Saleh.

He is a 9/11 survivor and the sole reason Saleh pursued a football career. We’ll discuss his story, but first, let’s look at his personal life.

David completed his bachelor’s degree with a dual concentration in accounting and finance from the University of Michigan-Dearborn.

Moreover, he has been working as a loan originator at National Home Lending, a Division of Gold Star Financial, since September 2010.

Since October 2022, David has also been self-employed as an agency owner at Covura Insurance Group in the Detroit Metropolitan Area.

Robert Saleh is an American football coach who currently serves as the head coach for the New York Jets in the National Football League (NFL).

Throughout his extensive 20-year coaching career, Saleh has primarily specialized in coaching defensive units.

He boasts two Super Bowl appearances, with one coming during his tenure with the Seattle Seahawks and the other with the San Francisco 49ers.

Saleh is of Lebanese heritage, and he made history upon his appointment as the head coach of the New York Jets, becoming the inaugural Muslim head coach in the annals of the NFL.

Additionally, he joins the ranks as the fourth Arab-American head coach in the NFL.

David Saleh Survived A Disaster

On September 11, 2001, David Saleh was employed at Morgan Stanley, stationed on the 61st floor of the South Tower in the World Trade Center.

Upon hearing an explosion, he started to descend via the stairwell as a hijacked airplane crashed into the North Tower.

Despite announcing the incident as isolated and instructing everyone to return to their desks, Saleh didn’t stop.

As he descended further, a second hijacked plane struck the South Tower. While getting down, he encountered firefighters going up the stairs.

Meanwhile, in Michigan, Robert and his parents were gripped by the unfolding tragedy on their television screens.

Unaware of David’s fate as the towers collapsed, they anxiously waited for news.

Eventually, David managed to locate a store from which he could call his family and reassure them of his survival.

Witnessing his brother’s remarkable survival inspired Robert to make a life-altering decision to become a coach.

Robert’s outlook on life changed when he observed his brother narrowly escaping a life-threatening situation.

This shift in perspective ultimately reshaped the course of his life.

He began to view each day as a precious opportunity that should not be squandered.

His passion for football became even clearer, and he left his 9-5 and pursued coaching.

Journey To The Top

At that time, Robert was employed at Comerica Bank in Detroit. However, on February 4, 2002, he made a phone call from his office to inform his family about a significant career change.

This marked the beginning of his professional journey, as he secured his inaugural position as an offensive assistant at Michigan State University.

He eventually went through various roles in the collegiate football landscape, securing positions at Central Michigan and Georgia.

In 2005, Robert received his first opportunity in the NFL as a defensive intern with the Houston Texans.

Finally, on January 14, 2021, Saleh inked a five-year contract to become the head coach of the New York Jets.
