Seth Greenberg – Early Life and Family

Seth Greenberg was born on April 19, 1956, in Plainview, Long Island, United States. He was born to parents Ralph Greenberg and Marylin Greenberg. Seth was their youngest child. He has two elder brothers: Dean Greenberg and Brad Greenberg.

The eldest, Dean Greenberg, stayed away from sports. He gravitated toward music and played drums in a rock ‘n’ roll band. He mostly lived abroad, first in Australia, then in India, with his fashion designing business.

Brad and Seth Greenberg were fond of basketball since childhood. In fact, the love for basketball was passed to them by their father, Ralph Greenberg.

Ralph played basketball for Hall of Fame coach Clair Bee at Long Island University. Further, basketball turned out to be that one thing that comforted the Greenberg brothers when their parents divorced.

Education and High School / College Basketball

Seth Greenberg first went to John F. Kennedy High School in Planview, New York. He graduated from there in 1974.

Along with his brother Brad, he led John F. Kennedy to twenty consecutive basketball victories and the North Shore Finals.

Seth Greenberg then got admitted to the Fairleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck, New Jersey. He played for the university as well.

He trained under coach Al Lolabo’s guidance while at university. Seth Greenberg became a university graduate in 1978, holding a BA in broadcast journalism.

Brad Greenberg is an American basketball coach, like his young brother Seth. Brad and Seth worked together at Virginia Tech.

Seth Greenberg – Career as a Basketball Coach

Assistant Coach

Seth Greenberg worked as an assistant coach at the University of Colombia, Pittsburgh, Virginia, and Miami. He served as an assistant coach in these universities between 1978-1987.

He was an assistant coach at Columbia University, under the head coach, Buddy Mahar. Greenberg later served as an assistant coach at the University of Pittsburgh under the head coach, Roy Chipman, from 1980 to 1983.

Pittsburgh appeared in the NCAA Tournaments of 1981 and 1982 with Greenberg’s guidance. For the 1983–84 season,

Greenberg then worked as an assistant at the University of Virginia under the head coach, Terry Holland. The Virginia Team made the Final Four of the 1984 NCAA Tournament.

He later served as an assistant at the University of Miami with head coach Bill Foster from 1985 to 1987.

Associate Head Coach at the Long Beach State

Seth Greenberg landed his first associate head coach post at Long Beach State in 1987. He worked under Joe Harrington until 1990. Then, he was promoted.

In fact, Long Beach State played in the National Invitation Tournaments (NIT) of 1988 and 1990, while Greenberg worked with them.

Head Coach for the Long Beach State

Greenberg was promoted to the head coach of Long Beach State in 1990. He served as a head coach for six years till 1996.

Long Beach State went 105–70, second behind Jerry Tarkanian for the most wins in the program’s history, under Greenberg’s guidance.

Further, they made postseason appearances at the 1992 NIT, 1993 NCAA Tournament, and 1995 NCAA Tournament during Greenberg’s mentorship.

Long Beach State also recorded its first Top 25 ranking in 14 years in the 1992-93 season. Similarly, they had a 64-69 win over the #1 Kansas at Allen Fieldhouse on January 25, 1963.

Also, Long Beach State got the triumph in the Big West Tournament in 1993 and 1995.

Greenberg mentored two successful future NBA players, Lucious Harris and Bryon Russell, while he served as a head coach at Long Beach.

Head Coach at the University of South Florida

Greenberg left Long Beach and joined the University of South Florida in 1996. He worked there for seven years, till 2003.

He made a 108–100 record while at South Florida. Further, South Florida became the Conference USA regular-season champions in the 1999–2000 season.

Also, they made it to the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) in 2001 and 2002 under Greenberg’s guidance.

Head Coach for the Virginia Tech Hokies Men’s Basketball

Greenberg left South Florida and started working for the Virginia Tech Hokies Men’s Basketball team of the NCAA in 2003. He served there for nine years, until 2012 when his contract was terminated without even notifying him.

He attained a 170–123 record in his nine seasons at Virginia Tech Hokies.

2003-2008

He started coaching at Virginia Tech when the school had its final season in the Big East Conference. Then, they joined the Atlantic Coast Conference in 2004.

Virginia Tech made it to the 2005 NIT on Greenberg’s second season of coaching.

Further, Greenberg was honored with the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Coach of the Year award in his second season.

He also helped in donating 2,400 student tickets to the NIT game against Temple in 2005. Similarly, they increased the donations to 3000 tickets for students in all three NIT games played in Cassell Coliseum in 2008.

Further, Greenberg led the Virginia Tech Hokies Men’s Basketball team to a 22–12 record with signature victories against #5 Duke on the road and #1 North Carolina at home in eight days during the 2006-07 season.  

The triumph promoted the Virginia Tech Hokies in the Associated Press Poll (AP) Top 25 for the first time in over a decade. They also grabbed their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1996.

Moreover, they gained a #5 seed in the West bracket. However, they had to give it up to Southern Illinois in the second round.

Virginia Tech had over 20 victories in the 2007-08 season under Greenberg’s mentorship. The team also made it to the quarterfinals of the 2008 NIT.

Furthermore, Greenberg earned the ACC Coach of the Year award for the second time.

2009-2012

The Virginia Tech Hokies then defeated #1 Wake Forest with a 78–71 win on January 21, 2009. Also, they were in NIT every time from 2009 to 2011.  

Henceforth, 2009-2011 were the Virginia Tech Hokies’ most successful and celebrated seasons under Greenberg’s mentorship.

Also, they made a 25–9 record in the 2009-10 season.

The Virginia Hokies then defeated #1 uke in Cassell Coliseum on February 27, 2011.

Greenberg’s termination from the Virginia Tech

Seth Greenberg was fired during a bizarre press conference in April 2012. He was not even notified about the termination of his contract prior to the conference. It was something like a ‘negative surprise.’

Greenberg was utterly blindsided and shocked after hearing Weaver’s decision. His former assistant, James Johnson, then replaced him.

Seth Greenberg is Jewish. He volunteered to mentor the USA Men’s Basketball team at the 19th Maccabiah Games in Israel in July 2013.

Broadcasting Career

Greenberg, a broadcast journalism graduate, joined the Entertainment and Sports Programming Network (ESPN) in 2012 as a college basketball analyst.

He appears on various platforms within ESPN. He primarily works as a game or studio analyst. Likewise, he is regular on SportsCenter and ESPN Radio.

Greenberg has also worked as an analyst on ACC Network’s Bald Men on Campus, alongside Jay Bilas and LaPhonso Ellis.
