At the early age of 13, Shannon was diagnosed with corrective Scoliosis surgery, a medical condition that presents as a sideways bend of the spine.

However, Spake was brave enough to follow all the medical procedures and surgery with two poles embedded on her back.

As a pre-teen, Shannon overcame scoliosis but got left with a scar on her back. But it didn’t; surgery didn’t prevent her from swimming competitively throughout high school. Shannon says,

“People see me in a bathing suit, and they’ll be like, ‘What happened to your back?’ I have this huge scar on my back, which I love”.
