Sophia’s parents, Kenny and Mollie Smith, are her inspirations. Growing up, she felt she was treated differently.

Being one of the only girls of color in a white community, she stood out. Even in the field and basketball court, she was stereotyped and lauded only for her athleticism, to which she resented.

Her father, Kenny, who played basketball at Wyoming from 1989 to 1991, instilled confidence into his kids.

In order to be the best, you have to learn how to be a little selfish, he constantly taught his daughters.

While his daughters were trying to fit in, he encouraged them that it’s okay to be different, to be special.

All three daughters were into basketball, but the youngest, Sophia, started loving soccer, which quickly became her priority.

Sophia used to ask her parents to kick around with her. Besides her parents, she idolized Wambach but wanted to play soccer like Marta, the Brazilian forward.
