Sorana Cirstea’s coach, Thomas Johansson, has helped her revitalize her career. The 2002 Australian Open champion also has his son playing the sport.

Since announcing his retirement from tennis in 2009, the Swede has earned a formidable reputation as a tennis coach. Before joining Sorana’s team last year in October, Thomas coached David Goffin and Maria Sakkari.

Sorana and Thomas’ partnership has helped the Romanian tennis player greatly. In the recent US Open tournament, Cirstea reached the quarterfinals before being knocked out by Karolina Muchova.

The former tennis player, Thomas, shares two kids with wife, Gisella. He has had a big hand in his son Lucas’s tennis career, who might become a big-name player in a few years.

Sorana Cirstea’s coach, Thomas Johansson, and his beautiful wife, Gisella Johansson, tied the knot on December 3, 2005, in Norrköping, Sweden.

The couple had been dating for a long time before their fairytale wedding, which took place in a Swedish church. Gisealla was first seen in the public limelight after Johansson won the 2002 Australian Open.

Gisella used to be spotted rooting for her beau from the stands during his playing days. She would accompany him to tennis tournaments all over the world.

And though we might not see more of the couple since Thomas’ retirement, his Instagram posts keep us updated on his married life with Gisella.

The former tennis player shares two kids with his wife, Gisella. Their first child, Lucas, was born on October 13, 2006. The couple also have a daughter named Celine, born in 2009.

Their son, Lucas, has followed in his father’s footsteps and is currently trying to make a breakthrough in tennis tournaments. Lucas recently played in the J60 Menton in France but lost out to Lenny Haddad in the first round.

He had made it to the quarterfinals of the J30 Hanko tournament last month in August but lost 1-6 and 2-6 against Great Britain’s Matthew Ground. Lucas is available on Instagram with the username @iamlucasjohansson and trains with Piatti Tennis Center.

Thomas and Giselle’s daughter, Celine Johansson, has kept her Instagram handle private but is jokingly called her father’s assistant even by the player he trains.

Sorana Cirstea And Thomas Johansson Partnership

Sorana Cirstea and Thomas Johansson’s partnership began last year in October. At first, it didn’t look like the alliance would flourish, but in 2023, it all changed.

Cirstea only had five top-five wins in her career and none since 2017, entering 2023, but in March alone, the Romanian tennis player had three top-five wins. The run included a victory over world no.2 Aryna Sabalenka in the Miami Open.

The tennis player has publicly credited Johansson for helping her revive her tennis career. In an interview with The Straits Times, Cirstea said Johansson has helped her become more aware of everything.

She also added that he had taught her a bit of tennis IQ. During his heyday, Thomas was known to read his opponents like a book, a trait he seems to have passed on to Sorana.

Thomas told the Romanian tennis player to stop focusing only on herself. He told her to understand her opponent’s body language and helped her mix her aggressiveness with smartness.

Though Sorana’s US Open run has ended, the pair can be proud of themselves as this was the first time in 14 years a Romanian tennis player had played in the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam tournament.
