Early Life

Cook has an older brother, Trenton, and is the son of Trent and Stephanie Cook. He and Jayson Tatum were teammates at Chaminade College Preparatory School.

Tyler scored 17 points in the championship game as a senior, and the duo led the team to a state title. He declared his plans to attend the University of Iowa in 2015.

Cook is one of only nine players in Iowa history to score over 1,300 points and pull down 600 rebounds.

The native of St. Louis, Missouri, led the team with six double-doubles this season and is one of only 15 players in Iowa history to have at least 15 double-doubles in their careers.

College Career 

He was thrust into the starting lineup right away during his freshman season, but he fractured his right index finger and missed seven games.

The athlete averaged 12.3 points and 5.3 rebounds per game on a team that made the NIT.

Cook averaged 15.3 points and 6.8 rebounds per game during his sophomore season.

Cook applied for early entry into the 2018 NBA draft in March 2018, but he did not hire an agent.

The Hawkeyes won the 2K Classic tournament by defeating Connecticut, with Cook scoring 26 points. He added another 26 points as Iowa defeated Iowa State.

Due to a knee injury, Cook was forced to sit out a game against Northwestern on January 9, 2019, but the team still won.

Cook averaged 14.5 points and 7.6 rebounds per game, leading Iowa to the NCAA Tournament as a junior. He inked with an agent after declaring for the NBA draft.

Denver Nuggets

The Denver Nuggets declared Cook’s signing to a two-way contract on June 30, 2020.

The Minnesota Timberwolves announced Cook’s signing on November 30, 2020, but the Timberwolves waived him on December 19, 2020.

On January 8, 2021, the Iowa Wolves declared that they had acquired Cook’s returning right and the 17th overall pick in the 1st  2021 NBA G League draft from the Oklahoma City Blue in exchange for James Webb III’s returning directly. 

Brooklyn Nets & Detroit Pistons 

The Brooklyn Nets signed Tyler to a 10-day contract on February 24, 2021.

Tyler signed a 10-day contract with the Detroit Pistons on March 19, 2021, and a 2nd 10-day contract on March 29, 2021. On April 7, the athlete finally signed a multi-year contract.

The Pistons waived Cook on July 31, 2021.

Cook averaged 4.9 points per game and 3.0 rebounds per game in 32 games for the Nets and Pistons in 2020/21. (13.7 MPG).

He hit 67.0 percent of his field goals but only 48.6 percent of his free throws.

They all think he’s a fantastic athlete. The team admires his ability to lead and his willingness to speak up,” Stephanie added.

However, according to her, Tyler’s education was first and foremost on the priority list.

“He admires and respects his teammates and coaches. It’s been an excellent environment for him to develop.”

“Furthermore, this group is only scratching the surface, and it will only be a matter of time before it comes together.

This season has the potential to be fantastic,” Stephanie said.
