By the end of his playing career, Wim maintained a career-high singles ranking of 1,291 on August 23, 1999. Likewise, he also graduated with a degree in Logistics Management.

Road to Coaching Career

After years of training and playing his own game, he commenced his road to coaching professionally in 2004. He became Belgium’s famous former #1 Kim Clijsters’ hitting partner back then.

Their team pair grew quite well. Hence, Kim took Wim as her official hitting partner, starting with the WTA Finals in Los Angeles.

Besides his coaching career, Wim also had his normal office job at Keramo Steinzeug.

However, he quit that job in 2007 to focus on his international coaching career full-time. Still, Wim wasn’t yet the coach that everyone asked for.

Therefore, he was always taking courses for the Flemish Tennis Federation courses while even attending multiple international tennis conferences.

That year, Kim won the U.S. Open as a comeback coach as a wildcard entry under his management.

Following it, Kim successfully claimed the 2010 WTA Tour Championships, followed shortly after by the Australian Open.

Together, they won three Grand Slams (2009, 2010, 2011), which eventually put Kim as the World’s number one.

In 2011, as she became the World’s best female tennis player, they parted their way in September of the same year with mutual consent.

Sabine Lisicki

After Wim’s collaboration ended with Kim, he first coached Russian junior champion Irina Khromacheva before coaching Sabine Lisicki.

As he worked with junior Number 1, Irina, till 2013, they bagged a high of WTA-165.

Right before the 2013 French Open, Wim worked together with Lisicki. Although they couldn’t bag any Grand Slam titles, they reached the final at Wimbledon.

Additionally, they took the win over Serena Williams after ending her 34-match winning streak. Apart from Serena, they also took a win over Agnieska Radwanska and several more.

However, before coaching her, he had also helped Dutchwoman Indy De Vroome for four months.

Similarly, he also helped her reach the French Open final and then the semi-finals at Wimbledon.

Halep had a successful year with Wim as she stood in the career-high ranking of world number two. Later, they split at the end of 2014 as Halep went to play under her native Romania coaches.

After the end, Wim started coaching former world number one Victoria Azarenka. Previously Victoria was coached by Sam Sumyk, who later coached Eugenie Bouchard.

During his tenure, Azarenka was in the lowest point of her career since 2007, standing at 50.

As they commenced their collaboration, they had instant success with the finals in Doha. However, in the middle, Azarenka even faced an injury, which ended her season early.

The next year, she won the tournament in Brisbane and even played the Australian Open’s quarter-finals.

Lastly, before announcing her pregnancy, she even claimed the Indian Wells & Miami, the Sunshine Double. Thus, right after they ended their work together.

As explained by Wim, Osaka has been a bunch of surprises for him every day. In September, Osaka also claimed her third Grand Slam trophy at the U.S. Open.

“When her attitude is good, her mind is apparent what she needs to do, what she wants to do. She’s a big server, she’s a big hitter, but she’s a lot more than that. She’s also a great thinker on the court.”
