In 1970, the Women’s World Cup was first held in Italy, when several countries had started to lift their ban on women’s soccer. After that, it was more of an unofficial tournament held every year.

The first Women’s FIFA World Cup was officially held in 1991, and since then, the tournament has been carried out every four years and one year. At present, 32 different national teams play in the tournament.

9. Spain

The team that started as an underground women’s soccer club is now number 9 in the FIFA’s world women’s soccer team ranking. The unofficial national team started playing professionally from the 171 Italian leagues.

Finally, in 1980, the unofficial team was accepted as the national women’s team. The team first left a mark on the international platform in the 1995 Euro qualifier. The Spanish team outdid the English team and qualified for the final tournament.

Since then, the Spanish team has qualified for the FIFA Women’s World Cup two times and UEFA Women’s Championship three times. In 1997, the team reached the UEFA’s semifinals.

8. England

In 1996, the success of the men’s national soccer team at the FIFA World Cup upsurged women’s interest in soccer. It led to the foundation of the women’s soccer team in England. 

Then in 1968, the Women’s Football Association was established. Finally, in 1972, UEFA incorporated women’s games, and F.A. lifted the ban on women playing in English Football League.

7. Brazil

5. Netherland

Since their debut on the international platform, the Netherland’s women’s team has been one of the best soccer teams. They have been part of the FIFA Women’s World Cup and UEFA Women’s Championship.

The German team is a two times world champion. They have also won eight out of twelve UEFA European Championships. Additionally, the team won six titles consecutively between 1995 and 2013.

2. Sweden

The number 1 among the women’s world cup’s most successful teams goes to the United States women’s national soccer team. The team has the most victories and medals in women’s soccer history.

The early history of the team is a troubled one. The first American women’s soccer team played its first match in 1985 but lost the game against Italy. However, since the start of the 1990s, the team has enjoyed much success and admiration. 

The American team has participated in eight editions of the FIFA World cup, seven editions of the Olympic Games, and nine editions of the CONCACAF Championships.
