The young ice hockey player Dylan Larkin was born in Waterford, Michigan, the United States of America. He is the son of proud parents Kevin Larkin (father) and Sidney Denise Larkin (mother).

Besides his parents, Dylan grew up with his older brother, Colin Larkin, in his hometown. Interestingly, Dylan is not the only one to pursue ice hockey in his family.

His older brother, Colin, signed a one-year contract with the Edmonton Oilers after completing his collegiate hockey career. Also, Dylan’s cousins, Adam and Ryan, play ice hockey.

As for his education, Larkin went to the Waterford Mott and Ann Arbor Pioneer High School. Then, for his collegiate career, young Dylan enrolled at the University of Michigan.

Early Career | High School and College

Going back to his career, Dylan has played minor ice hockey with Detroit Belle Tire. He even participated in the 2009 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with the team at a young age.

In the 2012-13 season, Larkin skated for the USA Hockey’s U17 team in his first season. Likewise, Larkin scored 13 goals and 14 assists in just 55 games.

Following his impressive records, Larkin returned for the NTDP’s U18 team during the 2013-14 season. He finished second with 31 goals and fourth with 56 points in 60 games.

Also, the NHL Central Scouting Bureau ranked Larkin in the 17th position as the top draft-eligible North American skaters into the 2014 NHL Draft.

College Years

After his high school years, Larkin began his collegiate career at the University of Michigan. There he played for the Michigan Wolverines during the 2014-15 season.

In January, he was named the Hockey Commissioners’ Association National Rookie of the Month. Not to mention, Larkin led all college hockey freshmen in his first year.

Likewise, Dylan recorded his career-best-five-point night in a 10-6 win at Ohio State. He also became the first Michigan freshman to record five points in a game since October 1997.

That year, Dylan was named the Big Ten First Star of the Week after recording a goal with an assist with 12 shots on goal.

Dylan Larkin | Professional Career

Following his successful freshman year as the Michigan Wolverines, Larkin signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Detroit Red Wings on May 21, 2015.

Right away, he was assigned to the Red Wings’ AHL affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins, following an amateur tryout.

Young Dylan finally made his debut as the Griffins on May 24, 2015, against the Utica Comets. In his second match, Larkin scored his first professional goal against Jacob Markstrom.

In October, Larkin made another history by making it to the final roster for the 2015-16 season, being the first 19-year-old to debut on opening night since Mike Sillinger back in 1990-91. 

During his NHL debut, Dylan made his first NHL point, an assist in the first period followed by his first NHL goal in the second period against Jonathan Bernier of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Later in November, he was named the NHL Rookie of the Month, leading with seven goals in 13 games.

Likewise, Larkin scored a goal for the fourth consecutive game, becoming the first Red Wings teenager to do son since Steve Yzerman back in 1984-85.

He led the rookies with ten goals, ranked third with 18 points, and 64 shots on goals in 24 games. Not to mention, Larkin got the NHL Rookie of the Month award.

On March 24, 2016, Larkin recorded his 200th shot of the season, making him the fifth Red Wings rookie.

He was also named the 2016 NHL All-Star Game and was the first rookie to play in the All-Star Game since Yzerman back in 1984.

Detroit Red Wings and International Play

At the NHL All-Star SuperSkills Competition, Larkin set the NHL record for the fastest skater with a time of 13.172 seconds.

Even in his rookie season, he recorded 23 goals and 22 assists in 80 games, becoming the sixth rookie in the franchise history to lead the teams in goals.

By the end of the year, Dylon was named the 2016 Detroit Red Wings Rookie of the Year by the Detroit Sports Broadcasters Association members.

Likewise, following his rookie season, he played both winger and center. Sadly, his sophomore year was more disappointing as he ended the season with only 17 goals and a minus-28.

On August 10, 2018, Larkin signed a five-year, $30.5 million contract extension with the Red Wings. Other than focusing on the Red Wings, Larkin represented the United States at the 2013 World U-17 Hockey Challenge. 

Following this, Larkin took part in the 2014 IIHF World U18 Championships as an alternate captain and got a gold medal.
