Gordon was born on March 23, 1990, in Indianapolis, Indiana, U.S. He was raised, however, in the small town of Brownsburg, just outside of Indiana’s capital. He was born to his father Gordon Scott Hayward and his mother Jody Hayward.

The NBA star has a twin sister named Heather Hayward.

The American-born grew up loving basketball so much that he sat down with his father’s help and recorded his goal of playing in the NBA at the age of five. He attended Brownsburg High School in Brownsburg, Indiana.

Before his growth spurt, he was more successful in tennis and was a two-time all-state singles player. After the growth spurt, however, his focus was on basketball.

High School Career

During his senior year in 2007-08, Gordon averaged 18.0 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game.

He and his teammate Julian Mavunga led the team to the Indiana Class 4A state championship. They defeated Marion High School by 40-39, and Gordon made the game-winning basket at the buzzer in the final game.

He was named Indianapolis Star Player of the Year and received the IHSAA Arthur L. Trester Award in Class 4A. He was also selected for the 2008 Indiana – Kentucky Boys All-Star Game and helped Indiana win.

College Career

During his freshman year, Gordon averaged 13.1 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. He was named Horizon League Newcomer of the Year.

Also, the Butler Bulldogs won the 2008-09 Horizon League men’s basketball season title.

During his sophomore year, he averaged 15.5 points and 8.2 rebounds per game. His team won both Horizon League regular-season titles and the 2010 Horizon League Men’s Basketball Tournament. He was named the Horizon League Player of Year.

In the final seconds of the 2010 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament championship game, he attempted a half-court shot that hit the backboard and rim and bounced away.

Professional Career

Utah Jazz (2010-2017)

Gordon hired Mark Bartelstein from Priority Sports & Entertainment to be his agent. He was selected as the ninth overall pick in the NBA draft on June 24, 2010, by the Utah Jazz. He has been quoted,

“I’m excited, I’m very excited,” he said.

“I had that checklist growing up and now I need to make a new one. I’m excited to get to work.”

He finished his rookie season with a 34-point game in a 107-103 win over the Denver Nuggets on April 13.

As a sophomore, he was selected to play in the 2012 NBA Rising Stars Challenging game for Team Chuck and recorded 14 points as his team won the game.

His NBA playoffs debut was against the San Antonio Spurs, but they lost 4-0 in the first round. He averaged a career-high in points per game during the 2012-13 season.

Gordon recorded career-high 37 points in a win against Oklahoma City Thunder on January 7, 2014.

During the 2014-15 season, he averaged a career-high in points per game. He scored a season-high 33 points against the New York Knicks on November 14, 2014, in a 102-100 win.

Gordon again averaged a career-high in points per game during the 2015-16 season. He scored a season-high 36 points against the Charlotte Hornets on January 18, 2016. He suffered a fracture of the fourth finger on his left hand on October 7, 2016.

On November 6, he made his season debut, scoring 28 points in a 114-109 win over the New York Knicks. 

On February 9, 2017, he scored a season-high 36 points in a 112–105 overtime loss to the Dallas Mavericks. On March 2, 2017, Hayward scored a career-high 38 points in a 107–100 loss to the Indiana Pacers.

He set a new career-high score of 39 points against the Minnesota Timberwolves on April 7, 2017.

The NBA star scored a career-high of 40 points on April 21, 2017, in Game 3 of the Utah Jazz’s first-round playoff series against the Los Angeles Clippers.

Boston Celtics (2017-2020)

Gordon declared that he would sign with the Boston Celtics on July 4, 2017, via The Players’ Tribune. He signed a four-year contract with the Boston Celtics worth $128 million on July 14, 2017. He quoted,

“After seven years in Utah, I have decided to join the Boston Celtics.”

Unfortunately, he fractured his tibia and dislocated his ankle in his left leg on October 17, 2017, just less than six minutes into the season opener game against Cleveland Cavaliers.

After undergoing surgery, he was ruled out for the rest of the season. He needed a second surgery in March 2018.

Gordon played in his first game after the injury on October 16, 2018, where he scored 10 points and five rebounds in 25 minutes in a game against the Philadelphia 76ers.

Charlotte Hornets (2020–present)

On November 29, 2020, Gordon was signed by the Boston Celtics to a four-year $120 million deal. Later, the Celtics traded Hayward to the Charlotte Hornets. 

The trade enabled the Boston Celtics to create a traded-player exception worth the value of the first year of Gordon’s four-year, $120 million contracts, which is $28.5 million, making it the most prominent traded-player exception created in the history of the NBA. 

On December 23, 2020, Gordon made his Hornets debut while playing against the Cleveland Cavaliers.
