Chriss (fully named Marquese De’Shawn Chriss Jr.) was born on July 2, 1997, under Cancer’s sun sign. Born in Sacramento, California, Chriss is the fourth oldest child in the family.

Additionally, he has three elder sisters, two younger sisters, and three younger brothers. Altogether, they are nine siblings.

First Love, Football

It is crystal clear that Chriss was passionate about sports from his early days. However, NBA or basketball wasn’t his first thought. In fact, his first love for sports was football, and it wasn’t delusional. 

That’s because, as per his passion and statement, he did prove himself to be worthy of status in that game. In addition, Chriss possessed great skills to be a tight end, defensive end, and safety back in the day. 

Following it, grades five to eight became one of the most pivotal points in his life. Indeed, it is also the very years that table turned his games. As a fifth and sixth grader, his teachers often criticized Chriss. 

Well, they had already marked his so-called “future,” stating that Chriss would end up in jail. Of course, pretty disturbing remark to come from a teacher. Leaving it behind, as an eighth-grader, Chriss ended his football dreams.

It was an unfortunate incident that ended Chriss with a broken collarbone. To elaborate, during his season’s games, he landed on his shoulder, which caught a long pass. In addition to that, he struggled with the injury. 

Consequently, his mother crossed football from his dreams, eventually keeping him away. 

High School 

Marquese Chriss is a 2015 graduate of Pleasant Grove High School in Elk Grove, California. His high school only presented with the junior varsity and varsity teams back in his days. 

To illustrate, they kept a limited number of roster seats for the team, so only a few were chosen. As a matter of fact, the chosen ones were always the ones with experience level. 

However, Chriss was someone who had a zero competitive experience level. By the end, Chriss was chosen, though (thanks to his energy and the amount of effort he portrayed).

In addition to that, as a rookie, Chriss commenced his days as a reserve player. However, before starting his plays in the varsity teams, Chriss had already claimed his seat in the starting line. 

Chriss led his team to a state championship and contributed to the 28–6 record during his tenure. By the end of his high school, Chriss had gathered various offers from colleges around. 

All in all, Chriss ended his high school with an average of 21.9 points, 11.6 rebounds, and 3.1 blocks per game.

Not to mention, ESPN and 247Sports.com ranked him the No. 60 prospects, while Scout ranked him No. 55, and Rivals ranked him No. 56. 

College 

With the high school graduation, Chriss devoted himself to the University of Washington. As far as the news goes, Chriss chose it as his stepfather lived in Tacoma, Washington, which impacted him. 

Apparently, right in the start with the college, he posted a double-double with a season-high 29 points and 10 rebounds. After that, however, he couldn’t maintain the streak as he plunged into fouls many times. 

As a record, he had three straight fouls during the 2015 Battle 4 Atlantis. Seeing this, Chriss was given a sports psychologist, who taught him defense without foul, as suggested by his mother. 

Indeed, it improved his three points and also impacted his rookie season’s stats. As he garnered an average of 13.7 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks per game, Chriss also bagged the Pac-12 All-Freshmen selection.

Marquese Chriss | Professional Career

Right after his first year with the University of Washington, Chriss decided to forgo his remaining three years as a college student. Subsequently, he entered the 2016 NBA Draft.

He was considered a top prospect in the mock draft. Likewise, he came on top with his skills and stats in player comparison.

Furthermore, Chriss was evaluated thoroughly during the drafting process until the end, when he was named a potential top 3 draft candidate. Initially, the Sacramento Kings drafted Chriss as the eighth overall pick in the first round. 

However, the night, he was traded to the Phoenix Suns with deals. Overall, Chriss became the top 50 rankings to be drafted in the top 10. 

Phoenix Suns

After signing a rookie scale contract, Chriss only commenced his gameplay with the team in the 2016 NBA Summer League. Right then, he only debuted for the team on October 26, 2016, against the Sacramento Kings due to his injuries. 

Likewise, his foremost start for the team only came on November 8 against the Portland Trail Blazers. Similarly, he had his first career double-double over the New York Knicks.

Moving on, he posted his first 20-point game against the Memphis Grizzlies after he was named the 2017 Rising Stars Challenge. By the end of the time, Chriss had played in all 82 games of the team. 

Therefore, he was the only player back then to do so. Moreover, he ended his tenure with the team as he was named the NBA All-Rookie Second Team. 

Even after departing with the team, Chriss came back for the 2017 NBA Summer League. He posted his career-high with 13 rebounds over the Memphis Grizzlies during the period. 

In the meantime, his consecutive streak of 124 games ended due to his hip injury. After the recovery, he recorded 100 career steals, three-pointers, and blocks at 20 years, 213 days old.

Other Clubs

Afterward, the Phoenix Suns traded Chriss to Houston Rockets in exchange for Ryan Anderson and De’Anthony Melton. Well, Chriss fell into injury right after signing. 

Thus, he made his debut later against the Portland Trail Blazers. Altogether, Chriss presented a contract that Rockets denied signing the $4 million option for the 2019–20 season. 

In addition to that, Chriss became the free agent by the end of the season.

Apparently, Chriss’s contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers was a three-team trade contract that included the Rockets and Sacramento Kings. However, it was short-lived. 

On October 1, 2019, Golden State Warriors signed in Chriss but again waived him on January 7, 2020. Following it, the Warriors made room for Damion Lee and against signed in Chriss a week later. 

Well, the contract they signed is a two-way contract, which was later converted into a 2-year rest-of-season contract. Currently, Chriss is on his way for injury rehabilitation which may take a while. 

In an interview in 2021, the Warriors revealed that they had traded Chriss to the Dallas Mavericks. Later on, the basketballer signed a two-year contract with the Mavs worth $3,152,449.

Marquese Chriss | Injury Report

As a professional athlete, Chriss has faced many injuries to date, which have kept him out of the games. The major injury he faced was on October 27, 2017, due to his sprained left ankle. 

Following it, Chriss had his hip strained on January 7, 2018, which missed him out of the match against the Houston Rockets.

Also, it was the same injury that ended his 124 consecutive games streak. During his tenure, he missed six games in total.

Talking about it, recently, on December 26, 2020, he broke his right leg and missed out on the rest of the season.

Update on Broken Leg

Chriss suffered that injury at Chicago’s Bulls’ practice facility during the team’s practice. To illustrate, he suffered a right syndesmosis ankle injury with a fibular fracture. 

Therefore, Chriss underwent surgery at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in San Francisco. After successful surgery, Chriss is undergoing rehabilitation for his recovery. 

Even though he couldn’t play, he is often seen suggesting and helping his teammates out for the time being.
