Michael van Gerwen: Early Life and Family

The darts legend Michael was born on April 25, 1989, in Boxtel, Netherlands. His Father’s name is Henri van Gerwen, and his mother’s name is Wilma van Gerwen.

Likewise, Michael has three siblings: Samantha van Gerwen, Kevin van Gerwen, and Peggy van Gerwen. 

Micheal has been a sports enthusiast ever since he was a child. When he was 12 years old, he used to play football as a defender. 

At the age of 13, he shifted his attention toward dart. After that, Michael started playing darts regularly. 

In 2003, at 14, Michael reached the Primus Masters Youth tournament final.

Likewise, in 2005, he began to win youth championships like the German Open, German Gold Cup, Norway Open, Swedish Open, Northern Ireland Open, and the Dutch National Youth Championship.

In the same year, he also won the youth championships, and the men’s events in Norway and Northern Ireland Opened.

Coming off with Flying Colors

Talking about Michael’s achievement, in 2005, he was the youngest-ever winner of a BDO ranking event at the Norway Open. 

Likewise, he was the youngest-ever quarter-finalist of a televised darts event at the International Darts League in 2006. 

Further, in the same year, Micheal was also the youngest-ever semi-finalist of a televised darts event at the World Darts Trophy.

He was also the 2006 youngest-ever winner of the Winmau World Masters. In 2007, the dutch player became the youngest player ever at the BDO World Championship.

He was also the youngest to do a televised nine-dart finish at the Masters of Darts. At that time, Michael was only 17 years and 298 days old.

In 2011, Michael was the PDC Young Player of the Year. Likewise, in October 2012, he got into the world’s top 10 for the first time. 

The young player’s success made no signs of stopping. In 2013, Michael was again the PDC Young Player of the Year.

Michael was also the first player to finish the Premier League of Darts top of the table in the same year other than Phil Taylor

Coming a Long Way

In 2014 Michael van Gerwen became the world’s number one for the first time. After Taylor, he was the second player to earn £1 million on the two-year rolling Order of Merit in 2015. 

Michael won the Best ProTour Player the following year. Moreover, he was again PDPA Players’ Player of the Year in 2016. 

He was also the 2016 PDC Player of the Year and Gary Anderson. Further, Michael also set the world record highest televised average of 123.40 in the 2016 Premier League. 

In 2017, Van Gerwen set the highest-ever average in the PDC World Championship of 114.05. Further, he also threw two nine-dart finishes in one match at the 2017 UK Open qualifiers. 

The victory of the Dutch player kept on following. He was awarded the position of Knight of the Order of Orange-Nassau in 2018.

In 2019, Michael became the first player to win 30 European Tour titles. Further, he also broke the record of Phil Taylor for most ProTour titles with his 71st victory. 

The Dutch player defeated Chas Barstow in his 2022 PDC World Darts Championship debut. However, he tested positive for Covid-19.

The “Coughing” incident

In 2022, Luke Humpries called out Michael for dirty tactics. He accused Michael of coughing when Luke was on the oche trying to win the match. 

Humpries was very annoyed at Michael when he left the match. However, Michael has denied allegations of Luke that his coughing was a tactic. 

In response, Michael said he coughed once, and Luke was 200 points behind. 

The “Beer” incident

In the 2018 World Darts Championship, beer was thrown at the world champion, Michael van Gerwen. 

The incident took place at the back of the walk-on area. Michael was waiting to be introduced to the crowd. However, a spectator suddenly threw beer at him. 

Michael and his security guard were covered in beer, and the player did not know how to react. It was an unusual incident ever to happen.

Michael exclaimed that he was furious at the incident but could not do anything. As a result of the incident, Michael had to go back to change his shirt, and the opening match was delayed.
