A former Canadian professional Ice hockey player, Patrick Sharp, works as an analyst for NBC Sports and TNT. In the 2022-23 NHL season, Patrick Sharp and Troy Murray were chosen as the two new color analysts by the Blackhawks to split analyst duties on NBC Sports Chicago.

From dreaming of playing in the National Hockey League (NHL) to making his dream alive, Sharp has done it all and still thriving in the hockey scene.

Patrick was born on December 27, 1981, and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He is the son of Ian Sharp and Ruth Ann Sharp.

He also has an older brother named Chris Sharp, who is currently living in Calgary, Alberta. 

During his childhood, Patrick relocated to serval times. Finally, he had to leave his native homeland and relocate to Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

At the age of nine, he again had to move to Thunder Bay, where he spent the rest of his childhood. 

Education 

As for education, he attended a local high school during his stay in Calgary and Thunder Bay.

Later for his college education, he settled and stayed in Burlington, Vermont, whereas his parents resided on Lake Superior and remained in Thunder Bay.

Junior Hockey And College Career

Patrick began his hockey career in his childhood town, Thunder Bay. For the first time he played for the Thunder Bay Kings Program.

Later, he played for the former Thunder Bay Flyers of the United States Hockey League (UDHL).

Admiring his talent and passion for hockey, he was drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers in the third round, 95th overall, of the NHL Entry Draft in 2001.

Professional Career

For his professional career, he majorly contributed to 3 different hockey teams.

Philadelphia Flyers

Sharp made his NHL debut after he had completed his two years with Vermont in the year 2003-2004.

He split the season while playing between the Philadelphia Flyers and their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Philadelphia Phantoms.

He recorded seven points with five goals in the game and two assists in 41 regular-season games for the Philadelphia Flyers.

Similarly, for the Philadelphia Phantoms, he recorded 29 points with 15 goals and 14 assists in 35 regular games.

During the 2004-05 NHL lockout, Sharp spent his entire season in the AHL with the Phantoms, where he played 75 regular-season games, registering 23 goals and 29 assists with 52 points.

Similarly, he played in 21 playoff games leading to a Calder Cup championship, where he had eight goals and 13 assists with 21 points.

Chicago Blackhawks 

Although he began his NHL career with the Flyers organization, later, he was traded to a different organization called the Blackhawks in 2005.

He was traded from the Flyers and another teammate, Erich Meloche, to the Chicago Blackhawks. They were exchanged for Matt Ellison and a third-round in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.

In 2007-2008 Sharp brought the Blackhawks into the spotlight with a record of career-highs of 36 goals, 26 assists, and 62 points.

He pushed the Blackhawks in 9 power-play goals, seven shorthanded goals, and also seven game-winning goals. 

On January 17, 2008, when it was the nearly halfway mark of the season, Sharp signed a new four-year contract with the Chicago Blackhawks, which lasted till the end of 2011-2012.

During the beginning of the 2008-2009 season, Sharp and Duncan Keith were named the team’s alternative captains. Unfortunately, the new season was filled with injuries for Sharp, which were limited to a few extents. 

Despite his injuries, he formed a highly offensive and young core that Jonathan Toews led along with Patrick Kane and a newly acquired defenseman Brian Campbell.

Finally, the season was finished with his contribution of 44 points in 61 games. During the 2009 playoffs, he added 11 points.

However, they were eliminated in the Western Conference Finals by another team, the Detroit Red Wings.

Sharp was also named the Most Valuable Player in the 2011 NHL All-Star Game, where he earned one goal and two assists in the game.

The New Contract With The Chicago Blackhawks

Sharp signed a new five-year contract with Chicago Blackhawks again on August 3, 2011, for $29.5 million. Later, for the 2012-2013 season, he carried an annual salary cap hit of $5.9 million. 

The former player had to take a break from the games due to undergoing an appendectomy.

According to his team physician, he had to take about three to four weeks of rest for a full recovery.

After recovery, he was able to get back on games on November 25, 2011. During the game against the Anaheim Ducks, it was a 6-5 win where he scored his second career NHL hat trick.

Sharp was able to finish the season with a total of 33 goals and 36 assists. Although many Blackhawks team members started playing for European leagues, Sharp remained in Chicago throughout the 2012-13 NHL lockout.

In his time there, he mostly spent his time with his infant daughter. Later, he also participated as a spokesperson in Gillette’s “My City is My Gym” fitness program.

After the resumption of games in 2013, Sharp completed 28 games where he recorded 6 goals and 14 assists with a plus-minus(+,-) rating of +8. 

Blackhawks won against the Colorado Avalanche with a 7-2 point where Sharp scored his third career NHL hat trick.

Similarly, Sharp scored his fourth NHL hat trick in a 5-3 win against the New Jersey Devils team.

Due to his effort and dedication, he was named to the Canadian Olympic team at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

Previously he won the Stanley Cup championship twice with the Blackhawks in the year 2010 and 2013.

Similarly, he won the Stanley Cup for a third time with his team in 2015, where he scored five goals with ten assists.

Dallas Stars 

The salary cap issues led Sharp and the Blackhawks defenseman Stephen Johns to trade to the Dallas Stars. They were exchanged for Trevor Daley and Ryan Garbutt on July 10, 2015.

There he played a match against his former team, the Blackhawks. There he was responsible for a goal and an assist in a 4-0 victory.

For Dallas, he played 76 games during his first year to record 20 goals and 35 assists.

After Returning To Chicago Blackhawks

Sharp went back to his former team, the Blackhawks, after signing a one-year contract for 2017-2018.

He accepted a pay cut, earning an $800,000 base salary with $200,000 in potential bonuses.

In the team, Sharp was named an alternate captain for their final home game of the season, where he was also honored after the game.

“I think I’ve known what I wanted to do for a long period of time here, and it’s never easy…But I think I’m just ready to take that next step in my life and looking forward to it.”

Commenting on the above sentence, Sharp announced his retirement after the final game.

Olympic Career

The retired NHL left-winger played in the 2014 Winter Olympics held in Sochi, Russia. He represented the Canada men’s national ice hockey team at the Olympics. 

The Canadians were the reigning champions after defeating the United States men’s national ice hockey team in the 2010 Winter Olympics held in their country.

Moreover, they also won the 2014 Olympics, earning Sharp his first Olympic gold medal. 

In 2014, they defeated Sweden to claim the title. Furthermore, they also avenged their 1994 Olympic gold medal loss where Sweden had defeated them to take the gold home. 

With the win, the Canada men’s national ice hockey team garnered nine Olympic gold medals. 

Besides that, it was Patrick’s first and only Olympic appearance. Likewise, he will not be present at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics as it is Summer Olympics.

Sharp retired after he played in the final home game of the 2017- 2018 season for the Blackhawks team.

Sharp was found to be involved in inappropriate relations with his teammate’s wife, confirmed by Sports Mockery. Sports Mockery conducted an investigation into the rumors surfacing against Sharp’s love life.

As per Sports Mockery, these information came from four different independent sources, each vetted and having personal ties with the Blackhawks.

Each sources accused Patrick of having s*x with Duncan Keith’s wife. He was also found to have had an affair with Cheryl Scott from ABC7 News.

Patrick married his longtime girlfriend, Abby Sharp. Abby Sharp is an American-born famous for her personality based in Farmington’s hometown (Connecticut, USA).
