Mills discovered his mother’s past as a teenager, which he describes as a turning point in understanding his identity. Since then, he has advocated for Indigenous rights, using NBA as an effective platform to raise awareness.

Mill feels proud of his origins and frequently incorporates Indigenous patterns and symbols into his basketball gear.

His parents initially met while working in indigenous affairs for the federal government. Later, in the early 1980s, they jointly established a basketball club named The Shadows to provide opportunities for Indigenous players.

Growing up, Mills first began his basketball journey playing for his parent’s club. Most of his success can be attributed to the guidance and influence he received from his parents.

On February 25, 2018, during a match against the Cleveland Cavaliers, a fan yelled, “Hey, Mills, Jamaica just called. They want their bobsledder back.”

Despite such negative remarks, Mills stayed professional and calm in the field.

The player today works with his parents to provide opportunities and fight for the right of Indigenous people.
