Early Life, Family, & Education

Rick Yutaka Fowler, famous as Rickie Fowler, was born in Murrieta, California, on December 13, 1988, to Rod Fowler (father) and Lynn Fowler (mother).

He got his middle name, “Yutaka,” from his maternal grandfather, from Japan, while his maternal grandmother was Navajo Native American.

Rickie has always followed the Japanese culture and is proud of his heritage. Talking about his education, he was born and raised in Murrieta and went to Murrieta High School.

Rickie’s father owned a trucking company.

Similarly, his sister also participated in bike sports.

Even Rickie followed his father footsteps to be a dirt biker, but later, he left riding due to an accident. So, instead, his grandfather introduced him to golf.

After that, Rickie started playing golf, and it won’t be a mistake to say that he learned everything independently while he learned golf by playing on the driving porch.

Later, in 2005 summer, Rickie won the Western Junior, and again in 2007, he helped the U.S. win the Walker Cup.

In 2007, during his senior year at high school, he won the SW League Final and helped his team win the state final.

The following year Fowler won the Sunnehanna Amature title and again defended the same title in 2008.

Similarly, in 2009 Fowler won all four matches and finished third in Sunnehanna Amature while helping the U.S. defend the Walker Cup. He also received the 2008 Ben Hogan Award.

Rickie Fowler finished as runner-up in the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Invitational.

He started his professional career by playing in the Albatross Boise Open on the Nationwide tour, which took place in August 2009.

Similarly, Rickie also participated in the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospital for Children’s Open; this was his first PGA Tour.

2010-2013

At the Waste Management Phoenix Open, held in February of 2010, Fowler finished second with a score of 15-under-par.

Likewise, in Rickie’s third PGA Tour, he entered the final round and became a runner-up at the Memorial Tournament in Dublin, Ohio.

This was his first PGA victory, eventually taking Rickie into the top 50 of the Official World Golf Ranking.

In September 2010, U.S. Ryder Cup chose Rickie as a captain’s pick for their team.

Rickie was only 21 when he made his U.S. Ryder Cup debut, becoming the youngest Ryder Cup player of all time.

Further, in 2011, Fowler tied for 5th in The Open Championship in Royal St Gorge.

After a disappointing performance in the FedEx Cup last round, Fowler stood at 37 in the FedEx Cup points.

However, he enhanced his playing level and earned a $132,000 bonus in the FedEx Cup. His first professional win was at OneAsia Tour’s Kolon Korea Open.

In 2011, Fowler was ranked the 32nd best golf player in the world.

Fowler defeated Rory McIlroy and D.A. Points, which marked his first PGA Tour victory.

Likewise, in 2013 Fowler finished as a runner-up in the Australian PGA Championship, four shots behind the tournament.

2014-Present

At the PGA Championship, Fowler, Phil Mickelson, Henrik Stenson, and McIlroy battled for the title on a rain-soaked Valhalla Gold Club near Louisville.

Fowler stood third even after holding the lead for most of the day.

He was the third player, besides Tiger Woods and Jack Niklaus, to finish all four majors at the Tour Championship in one calendar year.

He was placed 8th after the Tour Championship. Not so surprisingly, he was ranked the 10th best golf player in the world.

In May 2015, at The Players Championship, Fowler won his first game in three years after his T-12 finish at the Masters.

In 2015, Fowler won several games, including Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open (European Tour), Deutsche Bank Championship, and the second FedEx Cup Playoffs (third PGA victory by one stroke over Henrik Stenson).

Rickie barely maintained his Tour card, finishing 125th in the FedEx Cup, securing the last place.

Ricky Romano replaced Joe Skovron; he was the long-time caddie who spent 13 years on the bag for Fowler.

Not only that, after firing John Tillery, Rickie hired his old swing coach, Butch Harmon. He stood 6th in the season-opening Fortinet Championship, showing quick results.

Fowler tied in the second position at the Zozo Championship, a shot behind winner Keegan Bradley.

Comeback

On 23 January 2023, Fowler’s coach Butch Harmon predicted that he would win this year.

He also stated that it was sad to see him go from the top 10 players in the world to 160th place.

He has already started improving his position by standing 106th this season.

On February 13, 2023, he aced on the TPC Scottsdale after the first win since the 2019 WM Phoenix Open.

It did not happen on the famed 16th hole, known as the rowdiest in golf; however, it was well-timed.

In 216 measuring yards, he used his 6-iron perfectly. It was the first ace at the tournament this year.

Since the 2015 Quicken Loans National, it was the third hole-in-one on TOUR for Fowler.

In the 2023 Farmers Insurance Open, Fowler kept a torrid start to the final round, charging a long-range birdie.

Furthermore, on 21 January 2023, Fowler accessorized his sporting golf bag at The American Express with what seemed to be the one-year-old daughter, Maya Fowler, a nod to future success on the course.

Looks like Fowler has already planned out for Maya, as it was an American Junior Golf Association name tag. Fowler himself got his start from there.

The tags are the signature of the junior golf community as a marker of a great player. The AJGA tag read:”2040: Maya Fowler.”
