Sachin Tendulkar | Childhood and Early Years

Sachin Tendulkar, the famous Indian Cricketer, was born on 24th April 1973 in Dadar, Bombay, to his father, Ramesh Tendulkar, and mother, Rajni Tendulkar. 

Sachin’s father was a famous Marathi novelist and poet. Likewise, his mother was an insurance industry employee.

Sachin Tendulkar was named after Sachin Dev Burman, who was his father’s favorite music director.

He also has three elder half-siblings, half-brothers Nitin and Ajit, and a half-sister Savita from Ramesh’s first wife. 

Tendulkar spent most of his time in the Sahitya Saha Cooperative Housing Society during his childhood. 

He mostly used to pick fights with new children in his school and was considered a bully and troublemaker.

Before cricket, he played tennis, idolizing American tennis player John McEnroe. Later, in 1984 his brother Ajit introduced him to cricket to improve his behavior. 

Sachin’s first coach was reputed coach Ramakant Achrekar. But in their first meeting, Sachin didn’t play according to his talent. 

So, his brother requested to give him another opportunity. Later, while Ramakant hid behind the tree, Sachin showed his potential. 

Beginning of the cricketing journey

When Sachin trained under Ramakant, he studied at the Indian Education Society’s New English School. 

But, the coach advised him to transfer to Sharadashram Vidyamandir (English) High School after seeing his natural game.  

Sachin trained under Ramakant morning and evening at Shivaji Park. Due to a tight schedule, he moved near the park to stay with his uncle. 

Sachin practiced on the net for hours after completing the training. If he became tired, the coach placed a coin on stumps, and whoever dismissed him would get to keep it.

However, if Sachin completed the session without being out, he would get the coin. He mentions getting 13 coins. 

Sachin was considered a child prodigy featuring an ordinary conservation player in cricket. 

Besides school cricket tournaments, he played for John Bright cricket club in Kanga League. 

Likewise, in 1987 Sachin joined MRF Pace Foundation, intending to become a pace bowler. 

However, Australian pacer Dennis Lillee was not impressed and suggested Sachin entirely focus on his batting.

A few months later, Sunil Gavaskar, a former Indian cricketer, gifted Sachin his own ultra-light pads and comforted him not to get discouraged for not winning Best Junior Cricket Award.  

In Cricket World Cup, Sachin became the ball boy in a semi-final match between India and England in the same year.

Next year in 1988, Sachin scored 100 in every match he batted. In the Lord Harris Shield Inter school match, he formed 664 runs partnership with Vinod Kambli against St. Xavier High School. 

He scored 326 in the game. Moreover, that partnership became a world record partnership that remained until 2006.

Sachin Tendulkar | Professional Career

Beginning

Sachin made his debut for India in a test match against arch-rival Pakistan. On his debut, he managed to get 15 runs. 

Overall he scored 215 runs in the test but did not score any runs in ODI. Later, he became the youngest debutant for India in Test and ODI.

On India’s tour of England, he scored his first test century against England on 14th August 1990. He made unbeaten 119 runs in the second test. 

Likewise, before the 1992 Worldcup, he made 148 not out against Australia, becoming the youngest ever to score a century against Australia. 

Rise to stardom

Sachin’s performance peaked in his early twenties. He made his first ODI century (110) against Australia on 9th September 1994. 

Later, in the 1996 ICC World Cup, he became the tournament’s leading scorer, which included two centuries. But his team fell to Srilanka in the semis. 

Later in early 1998, Sachin scored three successive test centuries on Australia’s tour of India.

Moreover, in the first ODI match on 11th April 1998, he took his first 5-wicket haul, finishing with 5/32 in ten overs.

During the 1991 cricket world cup, Sachin’s father died. He flew back to his home, missing the game against Zimbabwe, to attend his father’s final rituals.

After returning to the next match, he scored an unbeaten 140 against Kenya and dedicated his century to his late father.  

In the 2001 India tour of South Africa, Sachin was handed a one-match ban for ball-tampering charges. 

In the same year, against Australia, he took his 100th ODI wicket dismissing Australian skipper Steve Waugh. 

Later, in August 2002, during the third test against England, Sachin broke Sir Donald Bradman’s record of the 29th test century. 

In the 2003 World Cup, Tendulkar scored 673 runs in 11 innings to help India reach the final. However, defending champion Australia retook the trophy home, but Sachin earned the Player of the Tournament award.

Following the World Cup, India toured Australia. In the last test match, Sachin spent 613 minutes and scored his first double century unbeaten 241 runs. 

On 10th December 2005, in the match against Sri Lanka, Sachin scored a record-breaking 35th test century. 

Bad Times

In the 2007 World Cup, Tendulkar batted at the lower order and scored 64 runs in three matches as India crashed out from the group stage only.

After a horrible world cup campaign, Sachin thought of retiring, but Vic Richards and Ajit Tendulkar convinced him to play. 

Later, in Future Cup against South Africa, Sachin became the first batsman to score 15,000 ODI runs.

Likewise, in the Australia tour of India’s second test match, Sachin scored 88 runs to break Brian Lara’s then-record for most test runs. 

On 24th February 2010, Sachin made 200 not out against South Africa, becoming the first male cricketer to score a double century. 

World Champion

In the 2011 ICC World Cup, Sachin finally won cricket’s most coveted prize after India defeated Sri Lanka in the finals. He mentioned winning the world cup as the proudest moment of his career. 

He was India’s highest run-scorer scoring 482 runs, including two centuries, and averaging 53.55 runs. 

Later, on 8th November 2011, Sachin became the first and only batsman to reach 15,000 test runs. 

Likewise, on 16th March 2012, in the Asia Cup match against Bangladesh, Sachin finally scored his 100th international century. 

Moreover, Sachin is the first and only to achieve that milestone. In his historic knock, he scored 114 runs off 147 balls. 

Mumbai Indians

During the inaugural IPL season, Sachin was selected as an iconic player and captain for Mumbai Indians. 

Later, in the 2010 season, Mumbai reached the finals but lost to arch-rivals CSK. However, he broke most runs in a single IPL season scoring 618 runs in 14 games.

He played his last match for Mumbai in the 2013 Champions trophy final against Rajasthan Royal. His team claimed the trophy, and Sachin scored 14 runs in the match. 

Sachin retired from IPL, scoring 2,334 runs in just 78 matches. To honor him, Mumbai retired his jersey number 10.

Sachin Tendulkar | Retirement and Outside Cricket

Rajya Sabha Nomination

In April, Sachin was nominated to Rajya Sabha by the Indian President. Moreover, he became the first active athlete to be nominated. 

Later, on 4th June, he took the oath of office. However, he declined to take a house in New Delhi allocated by the government, saying it was a waste of taxpayers’ cash.

Since being nominated to Rajya Sabha, he has donated his entire monthly salary to the Prime Minister Relief Fund. 

Retirement

Sachin retired from international cricket on 10th October 2013 after a test home series win over West Indies.

However, he retired from the ODI format on 23rd December 2012 after a poor performance in the England tour of India.

Sachin Tendulkar owns two hotels in Mumbai named Tendulkar’s (Colaba) and Sachin’s (Mulund). He opened these restaurants in 2002.
