Early Life and Family

The basketball player was born on February 28, 1989, in Brooklyn, New York. His father’s name is Charles Jenkins Sr. and his mother’s name is Patricia Jenkins.

Charles also had a big brother named Kareem Albritton. Further, Charles also has a younger sister.

It was Jenkins’ father and brother who encouraged him to start playing basketball. Charles played basketball in college and then in the Navy.

Similarly, his brother used to enjoy basketball and used to play in high school. They were the ones who made Charles fall in love with it!

Death of Brother

Kareem Albritton, Charles’s older brother, was shot and killed in Brooklyn on November 2, 2001. At that time, Charles was only 12 years old.

The death of his brother shattered him. He found it difficult to cope with the loss of his brother. The player faced a lot of issues. He had no interest in either school or basketball.

The only thing that came to Jenkins’ mind was his brother’s daughter, his niece. He wanted to spend as much time as possible with her.

For about a year, the player became almost invisible, unable to concentrate on anything. Charles’ grades also deteriorated so badly that his former school had to expel him.

Charles studied at the Holy Cross High School. However, he was assigned to Springfield Gardens High School due to his grades.

Springfield was a public school in New York with a bad reputation. It was one of New York’s worst schools at the time! However, it was also the only one who would accept Charles because he had fallen far behind in his studies.

From a Failure to a Successful Student!

At Springfield Garden, Charles made up for his lost grades in a short time. Jenkins says that his parents assisted him in putting it all together.

They did an excellent job and gave the player their full support. Further, they also understood how critical it was for Charles to get an education and get on the right track.

However, something ‘deeper’ compelled the player to make a complete 180-degree turn. Charles says that when his brother died, he saw how sad his mother was.

Moreover, the player was adding to her grief by failing in school. So he decided he didn’t want to continue doing that to her. Charles didn’t want to disappoint her, nor did he want to keep ‘breaking’ her heart because she was already dealing with losing a son.

So, the player promised himself that he would do everything he could to do right by her. It had absolutely nothing to do with basketball.

The player simply wanted to do well in school, get good grades, and contribute positively to his family.

Charles Jenkins: Early Career

Charles played high school basketball for three years.

In 2005–06, Jenkins averaged 21.1 points, 7.2 assists, and 5.1 rebounds on his way to being named to the All-New York City Team by the New York Post.

At Springfield, not only did the player improve his grades, but he also became a model for student-athletes!

The player attended Hofstra University for his college studies. He carried his outstanding performance (on and off the court) over into college.

The player graduated three months early with a degree in “Arts and Speech Communication” and became a Hofstra University Pride basketball legend!

Jenkins was named Metropolitan New York Rookie of the Year, CAA Rookie of the Year, and All-Metropolitan New York Third Team. The player also won numerous awards in 2008-09.

Among them was the coveted Haggerty Award, given annually to the best Division I men’s basketball player in the greater New York Metropolitan area.

Further, Jenkins improved most of his season averages as a junior in 2009–10. His individual performance earned him the title of Colonial Athletic Association Men’s Basketball Player of the Year.

In addition, the player became only the ninth repeat winner of the Haggerty Award. Further, Charles won the award once again and joined Jim McMillian and Chris Mullin as the only players in history to win the Haggerty Award three times.

What Motivated Charles to Become a Successful Basketball Player?

Aside from his parents and sister, it was his niece, Kemoni, the daughter of his tragically deceased brother, about whom Charles cared very much.

Kemoni was about 11 when Charles was in college. She lived in a rough area where education was not a priority. Gangs and a high crime rate plagued the area.

He knew that if he got the chance to go pro, he’d be able to provide her with financial stability and a better life. The player always imagined that if he was successful enough, he would be able to provide for her as she grew older.

This was what motivated Charles to become successful anyhow, and that is exactly what happened!

Professional Basketball Career

NBA

The Golden State Warriors selected Charles in the second round (44th overall) of the 2011 NBA Draft. On November 24, 2011, he signed with the Italian team Teramo Basket of the Lega Basket Serie A due to the 2011 NBA lockout.

However, the lockout ended in two weeks, and he left Teramo without having played a single game for the club. The player officially signed with the Warriors on December 9, 2011.

The player made his NBA debut on December 25, 2011, against the Los Angeles Clippers in the Warriors’ 2011–12 season opener. He entered the contest briefly and finished with one assist in one minute of action.

Settling into the role of competing for backup minutes to starting point guard Steph Curry, rookie Charles found himself with unexpected opportunities in the second half of the season due to Curry’s persistent ankle injuries.

Although the team brought in Nate Robinson early in the lockout-shortened season to take most of Curry’s backup point guard minutes, Charles ended up frequently starting in place of the injured Curry.

As Steph was ruled out for the rest of the season and Monta Ellis was traded, Charles’ minutes increased significantly. The player was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers for a second-round draft pick on February 21, 2013.

Europe

Charles signed a one-year contract with Crvena zvezda Belgrade on July 30, 2013. The player extended his contract with Crvena Zvezda for another season in January 2014.

Crvena Zvezda won the Adriatic League, the Serbian League, and the Radivoj Kora Cup in the 2014–15 season. The player signed a contract with Italian club Emporio Armani Milano for the 2015–16 season on July 8, 2015.

However, Charles returned to Crvena Zvezda on July 15, 2016, signing a two-year contract. The player led the Euro League and was also named the 2017 ABA League Playoffs MVP.

Likewise, Charles signed a two-year contract with Russian club Khimki on June 29, 2017. He competed in the basketball tournament for HBC Sicklerville in 2018.

Further, Jenkins signed a two-year contract with Crvena Zvezda on July 5, 2019. This was his third season with Zvezda. Jenkins signed a contract with the Greek club Olympiacos of the EuroLeague on June 20, 2020.
