Kyle Anderson | Early Life, Family & Education

Kyle Anderson was born in New York City to parents Kyle Anderson Sr and Suzanne Anderson on September 20, 1993. 

Anderson is brother to four siblings.  Furthermore, Kyle began playing basketball three days before his first birthday, on the day he began walking.

Before moving to Fairview, Kyle was raised in New Jersey. He was always into basketball since he was a child, and he attended his first basketball camp at the age of three.

Anderson’s basketball abilities are unquestionably inherited from his father, who coached him as a point guard for many years.

Tall Anderson, who was generally the smallest player on the field, gained point guard abilities early on while passing to his larger colleagues.

Kyle has possessed strong point guard talents, having had a passion for basketball since the beginning of his childhood and being guided by a coach father.

Kyle Anderson | High School Career

In the beginning, he chooses Paterson High school for his early education which was located in New Jersey, Paterson.

Despite his skills as the point guard, his coaches insisted he plays on the wing or in the post because of his good height.

Similarly, Anderson transferred to St. Anthony High School after two years at Paterson Catholic, which closed down after two years.

As a starter, he went 119–6 with a 65–0 record at St. Anthony.

Anderson headed the team in scoring 14.7 points, 6.5 rebounding, and 3.9 assists in a 66-62 victory against Plainfield.

He was invited to compete in the Jordan Brand Classic and the Nike Hoop Summit.

Kyle Anderson | College Career

Kyle joined the University of California to play division I basketball for Bruins on September 19, 2011, and to complete his collegiate education.

Moreover, his decision to join ULCA was Ben Howard, coach of ULCA has a track record of developing good point guards in the NBA.

Despite some struggles with Howland’s rigorous offense, he led the team in rebounding and was the only player in the Pac-12 to rank in the top 10 in both rebounds and assists.

Furthermore, he was the first Pac-12 player to record at least 300 rebounds and 100 assists in the same season since UCLA’s Bill Walton in 1973–74. 

Anderson was chosen to the Pac-12 All-Freshman team and the All-Pac-12 second team.

The power-packed phenom considered quitting college after being projected by NBA executives to be selected in the first part of the second round of the 2013 NBA draft if he declared himself eligible. 

Decision to Return

Anderson chose to return to UCLA for his last season of college in 2013–14, despite his family’s expectations that it would be his last.

Similarly, Kyle focused on improving his mid-range and long-range shooting throughout the offseason after shooting only 41.6 percent the previous season.

UCLA and Missouri won the Continental Tire Las Vegas Invitational on November 29, and Anderson was named tournament MVP, as the Bruins began the season with a 7–0 record.

Anderson and Jordan Adams were banned for one game on February 27 after violating team rules.

Furthermore, Kyle was named the Pac-12 Championship’s Most Outstanding Player after UCLA won the conference tournament for the first time in six years.

Kyle Anderson notched 21 points, 15 rebounds, and five assists in a 75–71 victory against No. 4 nationally rated Arizona in the final game.

In addition, Anderson was named “the nation’s best triple-double danger” by the Orange County Register, scoring 14.9 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 6.5 assists per game.

He was the first player in Pac-12 history to have 200 rebounds and 200 assists in a single season, as well as the first Division I player to have 500 points, 300 rebounds, and 200 assists.

San Antonia Spurs

Anderson was taken 30th overall in the first round by the San Antonio Spurs, who had just won the 2014 NBA Finals. He joined the Spurs on July 12, 2014, for Las Vegas Summer League.

Anderson was the team’s lone new player to begin the 2014–15 season, with the rest of the championship roster remaining intact.

In the later game of a back-to-back series for the Spurs, he made his NBA debut, playing a team-high 31 minutes in a 98–81 defeat to the Houston Rockets.

Moreover, Kyle made his NBA debut on December 10th, 2014, scoring nine points in a 109–95 win over the New York Knicks with five Spurs out due to injury or rest. 

During his first season, he also had various assignments with the NBA Development League’s Austin Spurs. He was selected D-League Performer of the Week on February 9. 

Moreover, Anderson had back-to-back double-doubles and averaged 19.0 points, 11.0 rebounds, 5.5 assists, and 1.5 blocks in Austin’s 2–0 week. 

He was titled the NBA Development League Player of the Month for February, as he led Austin to an 8–1 record while averaging 22.8 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 4.7 assists.

Las Vegas Highlights

Kyle participated in the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas with the Spurs over the offseason.

Similarly, he was awarded the league’s MVP after averaging 21.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 27.3 minutes in seven games.

In 2015–16, he became a regular member of San Antonio’s rotation, appearing in 78 games and averaging 16 minutes per game.

Kyle had 13 points, seven assists, and four steals in 36 minutes against the Memphis Grizzlies on March 28, 2016. In terms of minutes and assists, he set career highs.

Furthermore, in an April 7 defeat to the Golden State Warriors, Anderson collected a career-high 11 rebounds in 20 minutes off the bench. 

With 15 points and 10 rebounds in the regular-season finale against the Dallas Mavericks, he recorded his first double-double in the NBA, helping the Spurs to a 96–91 victory. He tied for his career-high in points and added a career-high five steals.

Similarly, in 2016, Anderson returned to the Summer League and was named the league’s best player. 

In three games in the Utah league, he scored a league-high 23.7 points, and in two games in Las Vegas, he averaged 18.5 points and six rebounds, before the Spurs sent him home, believing he had nothing left to prove in the league.

In the Western Conference Finals, Anderson had a season-high 20 points, seven rebounds, and four steals in the Spurs’ season-ending Game 4 defeat to Golden State.

Moreover, he focused on finishing around the rim throughout the summer and getting in shape so he could play guard or small forward while still being strong enough to play power forward.

Ruled out

Beginning as a starter in the 2017-18 season, he made victory against Atlanta Hawks. During the Oklahoma City game, he suffered from grade I strain to the MCL.

Anderson claimed physicians removed his top rib to relieve the nerve flow from his neck to his right hand during thoracic outlet decompression surgery in April, which prompted him to relearn himself to shoot again.

For the 2019-20 season, his shoulder surgery was still experiencing discomfort but it got better during the regular season.

He had double-digit rebounds in each of the first two games of the 2020–21 season, including a career-high 14 rebounds and a personal best of 20 points against Atlanta on December 26, 2020.

Furthermore, he had four blocks in a 115–110 win over the New Orleans Pelicans on May 10, 2021, as the club tied a franchise record with 19 blocks, clinching a place in the play-in tournament for Memphis.

He equaled his career-best of four blocks in a 100–96 win against the Spurs in the Grizzlies’ first play-in game, and he established a Memphis franchise single-game playoff record in their playoff opener at Utah.
