Kyle Shanahan | Early Life and Education

Shanahan (fully named Kyle Michael Shanahan) was born on December 14, 1979, under the star sign of Sagittarius. Well, he is one of the only two kids his mother, Peggy Shanahan, and father, Mike Shanahan has.

His father, Mike, used to be a coach at the University of Minnesota, while his mother used to be a housewife. As for his siblings, he has a sister named Krystal Shanahan. 

Well, Kyle spent his first few years in Minneapolis, Minnesota, before moving to Saratoga. However, he attended Saratoga High School in Saratoga, California, back in 1994.

During that time, Kyle’s father used to work as an offensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers. 

Later, as his father shifted to work for the Denver Broncos, Kyle studied at Cherry Creek High School in Greenwood Village, Colorado. Kyle gained a scholarship offer to study at Carl Franks of Duke University following his high school days. 

Initially, Kyle accepted the offer; however, he later transferred to the University of Texas at Austin as a redshirt freshman. 

Kyle Shanahan | Professional Career

Kyle gained the love and passion for football from an early day, thanks to his father, Mike! As he grew up playing football, his father taught him plenty of skills. Hence, he ended up playing for his school team to college. 

After moving to the University of Texas, Kyle played as a wide receiver on the ‘Texas Longhorns Football Program.’ During his university days as a player, Kyle maintained 14 passes for 127 yards. 

Kyle Shanahan was an above-average player all along his journey, but he didn’t continue his days as a player. Instead, he stood to become the graduate assistant to Karl Dorrell at UCLA after graduating from Texas University in 2003.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

After a year coaching career in college, Kyle Shanahan commenced coaching in the NFL team, Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The young athlete initially worked under the supervision of the head coach, Jon Gruden, as an offensive quality control coach assistant. 

Well, he spent a total of two years on the team, during which he maintained a score of 11–5. So indeed, the seasons were not a massive success for his career, but it didn’t come out as a total flop too.

Houston Texans

With the Houston Texans, Kyle Shanahan got his foremost job as a position coach. Gary Kubiak hired him as a wide receivers coach in 2006, and Kyle became the youngest position coach back then in NFL.

Then, later in 2007, the University of Minnesota offered him the role of an offensive coordinator. However, Kyle declined their offer for the position stating his desire to coach in the NFL.

A year after, Kyle stood as the quarterback’s coach and an offensive coordinator for the remaining three seasons with the team. It occurred after Mike Sherman left his position at Texas University.

Together with Gary Kubiak, the team made a noticeable improvement in their game. 

Washington Redskins

In 2010, Kyle Shanahan joined the Washington Redskins as their offensive coordinator. Back then, his father, Mike, was the new head coach of the team.

But the two couldn’t accomplish much during their tenure with the team, and indeed, this bought several criticisms and comments for them. So, the team fired Kyle along with his father and the rest of the mates in the end. 

Cleveland Browns

Nearly a year later, in 2014, the Cleveland Browns hired Kyle Shanahan as offensive coordinator. However, his days didn’t last long with the team. 

According to the sources, Kyle resigned from the team after the dispute with the management team. 

Atlanta Falcons

After ten days of his resignation from the Cleveland Browns, the Atlanta Falcons hired Kyle as their new offensive coordinator on January 18 of 2015. Throughout his journey with the Falcons, Kyle proved himself as one o the best coach. 

In the season 2016, he bagged the title of the NFL Assistant Coach of the Year. 

San Francisco 49ers

After two years career with the Falcons, the San Francisco 49ers hired Kyle as their head coach on February 6, 2017. Right after he joined the team, he bought success in their first preseason game, followed by their first regular-season game. 

Hence, Kyle ended his first season with the team on five winning streaks but with six wins out of seven games they played.

In 2018, he led the team for only four wins as their quarterback Garoppolo struggled with immense injury. 

Likewise, the following 2019 season was a great victory for both Kyle and the team as they had eight games win. In addition, this season, the team bagged the NFC West division title and became the #1 seed. 

Kyle Shanahan extended his contract with San Francisco on June 15, 2020, and later finished his season with a 6–10 record.

Back in 2010, when the Washington Redskins hired Kyle Shanahan to the team, many stated it to be an example of unearned nepotism. Furthermore, the news stated the hiring process to be empowered and enabled by his father. 

Similarly, while with the Cleveland Browns, Kyle had friction with Head Coach Mike Pettine. Therefore, before he resigned from the team, Kyle made a 32-point presentation about why he wanted to leave the Browns after the season. 

Later, in 2020, Kyle Shanahan faced a major fine issue with the NFL. During the coronavirus altered season, the NFL was strict on the safety rules and regulations amidst the pandemic.

Hence, when Kyle failed to wear a face mask, they fined him $100,000 while the San Francisco 49ers team also faced a $250,000 fine.

Recently, on July 1, 2021, Kyle Shanahan yet again faced a fine of $50,000 from the NFL for violating practice rules during organized team activities.

Besides being a football coach, Kyle Shanahan is a loving husband and a father. Well, the duo has a romantic love story as in a fairy tale. As a matter of fact, Kyle and his wife, Mandy, are high school sweethearts who met back while studying in Cherry Creek High School in Colorado. 

Moving on, the duo commenced dating in the early days. While Kyle entered Texas University, Mandy enrolled in the University of Colorado. Despite the distance, they stood firm as the pillars and would often meet each other on weekends. 

Initially, Kyle had no intention of marrying early in his age; however, as Mandy struggled with her mother’s illness and death, Kyle changed his mind and stood beside her. On July 5, 2005, the duo took vows in a Roman Catholic ceremony.

Two years after their marriage, the duo had their first kid, a baby girl named Stella Shanahan, in 2007.
