Tony Cingrani | Amateur Career

In 2007, Tony threw a no-hitter with 20strikeouts against the state’s top-ranked team during his high school days. At South Suburban College, he established the school’s career record for strikeouts (195k in 143 ⅓ IP).

He played for the Rice Owls baseball team at Rice University. Tony struggled as a starting pitcher in his junior year, i.e., during the first year at Rice University.

He pitched to an 8.59 earned run average (ERA) in six games started, leading to 16 walks and striking out only 13.

Tony wondered if the team was better off without him and shared his concerns with the coaches, but the coach believed he could progress, and he stayed with the team.

Because of the inconsistency of his off-speed pitches, he did not make the Owls’ starting rotation. During his senior season, he converted into a relief pitcher.

Further, he tied the school record with 12 saves. He also had a 4–2 win-loss record, a 1.74 ERA, and struck out 66 batters while walking only 10 in 57 innings pitched.

Tony Cingrani | Professional Career

Cincinnati Reds

2011

Tony was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the third round, with the 114th selection of the 2011 Major League Baseball draft.

He made his professional career debut with the Billings Mustangs of the Rookie-level Pioneer League, pitching in their starting rotation.

Moreover, he recorded a 1.75 ERA in 13 games started. For his performance, he was named MLB.com’s Short-Season Starting Pitcher of the Year

Further, Tony fanned 80 batters in just 51.1 innings for Rookie Billings and held batters to a .190 average. Later, he was named Pioneer League Pitcher of the Week from August 22 to August 29.

Likewise, Baseball America also named him a Rookie All-Star and the eight-best prospect in the Pioneer League.

2012

Tony began the 2012 season with the Bakersfield Blaze of the Class A-Advanced California League and received a mid-season promotion to the Pensacola Blue Wahoos of the Class AA Southern League.

He scored 1.73 ERA in all of minor league baseball. On September 4, 2012, the Cincinnati Reds promoted him to the major leagues.

Moreover, on September 9, he made his major league debut, throwing three innings in relief.

He was the organization’s Minor League Pitcher of the Year. Notably, his fastball was also voted the best in the California League by the managers. 

Further, Tony became the second reliever in franchise history to record at least five strikeouts in his first career appearance.

His 3.0-inning stint tied Alfredo Simon for the longest by a Reds reliever that season and his five strikeouts tied Aroldis Chapman and Simon for the most in a game by a Reds reliever all year.

2013 – 2014

Starter Johnny Cueto was placed on the disabled list. Because of that, Tony was called up by the Cincinnati Reds on April 18, 2013, to take the starting rotation spot.

He bounced between the rosters of the Cincinnati Reds and the Arizona League Reds in July.

Tony was optioned to the AZL Reds on July 17, recalled on July 23, optioned on July 24, and recalled on July 28.

He did not appear in any games for the AZL Reds during this period. In 2014, Tony missed most of the season due to a left shoulder injury.

He began the season with the Cincinnati Reds and went 2-8, 4.55 in 11 starts, and 2 relief apps before he was optioned to Class AAA Louisville on June 20. He went on the disabled list on June 26.

2015 – 2017

In 2015, during the spring training, the Cincinnati Reds announced that Tony would serve as a relief pitcher.

He made a career-high 35 apps during two games with the Cincinnati Reds. Further, Tony retired 19-34 first batters, stranded 16-25 inherited runners, and suffered two blown saves.

Later, he earned a spot on the Opening Day roster and posted a 3.47 ERA in 24 relief apps before being disabled on June 15 with a strained left shoulder. He pitched to an ERA of 5.67.

In the 2016 season, Tony pitched to an ERA of 4.14. He recorded a career-high of 65 apps and a team-high 17 saves. 

Further, while playing for the Cincinnati Reds, Tony posted a 5.40 ERA during the 2017 season.

Los Angeles Dodgers 

Tony was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers on July 31, 2017. During the 2017 season, he pitched in 19 ⅓ innings in 22 games for the Dodgers, posting a 2.79 ERA.

He made two appearances in each of the NLDS and NLCS in the postseason, giving up no runs and allowing only a single and a hit by pitch.

During the 2017 World Series, he appeared in just three games, allowing one run to score on two hits with two strikeouts in three innings. 

After the season, Tony signed a one-year contract with the Dodgers for 2018, worth $2.3 million.

Against the San Diego Padres, he and three other pitchers were involved in a combined no-hitter on May 4, 2018, as the Dodgers won 4-0. It was the highlight of his career.

Further, he posted a record of 1-2 with an ERA of 4.76 and was limited to just 30 appearances on the season.

In the second half of 2018, Cingrani suffered a shoulder injury that kept him out for the rest of the season.

Sadly, he again suffered another injury in March 2019, and the Dodgers shut him down for Spring Training.

On May 4, he started a rehab assignment with the High-A Rancho Cucamonga Quakes team. On May 8, his rehab assignment was moved to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

He underwent arthroscopic surgery in June 2019 to fix a left labrum tear and was ruled out for the season.

St. Louis Cardinals

The Dodgers traded Tony to the St. Louis Cardinals on July 31, 2019. Later on October 31, 2019, he became a free agent.

Lexington Legends

Tony Cingrani signed with the Lexington Legends of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball on May 13, 2021.
