Howe debuted in the NHL on October 16, 1946, wearing the number 17 jersey. For the Detroit Red Wings, he started as a right-winger. But, when Roy Conacher left the team, he picked his number 9.

During the first three years, he had a total of 35 goals. Howe was a consistent scorer from then on. Starting in 1949, Howe was one of the leading scorers in the NHL, which he held for the next two decades.
