Smith attended Georgetown Preparatory School in North Bethesda, Maryland, where he was team captain and played offensive line and defensive tackle.

The football coach played guard at the University of North Carolina from 2001 to 2005. However, due to his foot injury, he wasn’t able to show his best performance.
Smith began his NFL coaching career in 2007 as the Washington Redskins’ defensive quality control coach.
