What had Gone Wrong in Trevon Duke’s 2018 NBA Draft?

As 6 feet, 2 inches guard with a 6’8″ wingspan and a 41.5-inch vertical entering his freshman season at Duke, Duval’s most prominent strengths were his speed, athleticism, and ability to find his way in the paint.

He had a unique physical appearance that drew everyone’s attention.

But his game didn’t stand out for the Blue Devils, led by Marvin Bagley III and Wendell Carter Jr., as well as Gary Trent Jr. and Grayson Allen. Duval’s effectiveness and output suffered as a result.

Then, according to his father, Duval struggled in the pre-draft process, hiring an agent late and not participating in extra workouts.

People in Trevon’s year thought his draft position was solid at the time, even if he wasn’t seen as the surefire lottery pick he’d been coming out of high school.

Mock drafts for the 2018 draft showed Duval slipping. Bleacher Report’s Jonathan Wasserman projected Duval as the last pick in the first round in February. Duval was expected to go late in the second round in May and June.

After all, Duval felt he’d been duped when he was left undrafted.

Trevon Duval: NBA Teams

Milwaukee Bucks (2018–2019)

None of the NBA teams drafted Duval in the 2018 NBA draft. He was Duke’s first one-and-done player to go undrafted. He signed a contract with the Houston Rockets for the NBA Summer League after that.

Trevon signed a two-way contract with the Milwaukee Bucks on July 24, splitting time with the Bucks and the Wisconsin Herd, their NBA G League affiliate.

On February 8, 2019, Duval made his NBA debut, scoring two points and dishing out one assist in success over the Dallas Mavericks.

The Milwaukee Bucks waived Duval on March 24, 2019, after he appeared in just three games.

Rio Grande Valley Vipers (2019)

Duval was signed to a two-way contract by the Houston Rockets on March 26, 2019.

He did not play for them during the regular season, and his late signing made him ineligible for the playoffs. Instead, the athlete spent most of his time with the Rockets’ G League affiliate, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers.

Duval represented the Houston Rockets at the 2019 NBA Summer League in Las Vegas.

Iowa Wolves (2019–2020)

Duval was selected by the Iowa Wolves with the fifth overall pick in the first round of the 2019 NBA G League Draft on October 26, 2019.

He had 14 points, five rebounds, five assists, two blocks, and one steal in a 152–148 loss to the South Bay Lakers on February 24, 2020.

Grand Rapids Gold (2021–present)

A former Duke point guard, Trevon Duval, was selected in the second round of the NBA G-League Draft in 2021.

The Grand Rapids Gold selected Duval with the sixth pick of the second round (34th overall). The Gold is the former Blue Devil’s fourth G-League team in his professional career.

Grand Rapids is the Denver Nuggets’ G-League affiliate, and Duval joins them after a stint with the Hamilton Honey Badgers of the Canadian Elite Basketball League.

Duval started all 14 games he played for the Honey Badgers, averaging 11.1 points, 1.8 rebounds, and 3.0 assists while shooting .472 from the field, .383 from long range, and .850 from the free-throw line. In terms of scoring and assists, he was second on the team.

Trevon Duval: Early Life and Family

Trevon Duval was born to Chaka Campbell and Trevon Duval.

His first teacher was his father. Trevon, the oldest of four children, remembers his father slipping a Nerf basketball into his crib when he was a baby.

Trevon played in a YMCA league at the age of two, and he would show up to games wearing headbands and Jordans, shooting jumpers over 4-year-old kids.

His father used to drill him on their Little Tikes hoop in their old apartment. On VHS, father and son would watch “Come Fly With Me,” a Michael Jordan documentary from 1989.

They also studied streetball legends like Rafer “Skip 2 My Lou” Alston and Ed “Booger” Smith, a Brooklyn streetball legend, by listening to AND1 mixtapes.

Trevon’s Father Pushed him to be the Best.

Trevon’s father continued to push him as he grew older. Other parents noticed it. They questioned whether the father’s exertion of such force on his son was healthy.

James Johns, who has coached Duval in AAU basketball since sixth grade, initially thought the father was insane. He soon discovered that Trevor Duval wasn’t insane; he was driven toward a goal, and Trevon was driven toward the same purpose.

Trevon Duval instilled in his son the importance of having fun and being “fundamentally creative,” as he puts it. Trevon’s father encouraged him to research NBA guards as he grew older.

His father’s family is from Trinidad, and his mother grew up in Jamaica before moving to New York in elementary school.

The Harlem Globetrotters held a camp in Delaware when he was four years old. Trevon’s father told him to lie about his age because the camp was only for seven and up kids.

“My father had a lot of good intentions for me in whatever I did,” Duval said. “There were difficult times. It took me a while to realize this. But I most certainly do now.”

Trevon Duval’s net worth is estimated to be around $1 million.

Playing in the CEBL is not glamorous because teams have a $6,000 salary cap per game, which means players earn around $700.00 per contest.

Duval signed a contract with the G-League (not the team) as a draft rights player and will earn around $7,000 monthly for the five-month regular season.

As a professional basketball player, he should also have signed various endorsements and sponsorships projects with famous brands.

As we all know, such projects also help the player to earn a significant amount contributing to their already enhanced wealth.

Grand Rapids Gold (2021–present)

The Grand Rapids Gold chose Duval, a professional basketball player, in the 2021 NBA G League draft in October. On December 15, he was released. On December 30, the Grand Rapids Gold reacquired him.
