Despite receiving scholarship offers from Tennessee, LSU, Alabama, Auburn, and South Carolina, Michael chose to play for Ed Oregan at the University of Mississippi, the alma mater of his adoptive parents.

Oher started playing with Ole Miss Rebels as an offensive guard in ten games and became a first-team freshman All-American.
