Walt Lemon Jr. | Early Life

Lemon was born to his parents, Walt Lemon Sr. and Katrina Lemon. He was born on July 26, 1992, thus being the zodiac of Leo. He grew up in Chicago, Illinois, and with his four siblings- Shabria, Shaniece, Darrius, and Dennis.

Lemon attended Percy L. Julian High School in Chicago. He joined and played for his high school basketball team, where he scored an average of 19 points and six assists, and five rebounds. This talent led him to the second-team All Chicago Public League and third-team 3A all-state by Illinois Basketball Coaches Association.

Lemon lost his father to cancer when he was a sophomore in high school. He wears his jersey number 25, as Lemon’s mother, a high school volleyball player, also wore the number 25, thus representing her mother. It turns out athletic blood runs in the family. 

As he is the only basketball player who plays for prestigious teams, his family often watches his game and supports him.

College Career

His passion for basketball led him to Bradley Univerity, majoring in Psychology.  He graduated with a 3.29 cumulative grade point. At university, he played for the Bradley Braves men’s basketball team.

He also earned a spot on Bradley Athletic Director’s Honor, three times meeting all criteria. Bradley ranked him in an all-time top 10 in career points during the time of his graduation. 

Lemon is the recipient of many awards, including ‘Athlete of the Year’ in 2014. Moreover, Lemon is the first Bradley player to win MVC Men’s Basketball Scholar.

Before signing with Hapoel Tel Aviv in 2020, he has been involved with many other notable teams. New Orleans Pelicans, Fort Wayne Mad Ants, Istanbulspor Beylikdüzü are some of the teams, for instance. 

Körmend (2014)

Lemon was undrafted in the 2014 NBA draft. Eventually, this means that players can sign with any team, thus becoming unrestricted free agents. And thus, joined Golden State Warriors for the 2015 NBA Summer League.

Walt Lemon Jr. began his professional basketball career with EGIS Körmend of Hungary on September 10, 2014. Before signing Lemon, Körmend was placed in eighth place, ultimately failing to qualify for playoffs. Thus, to improve the team’s performance, they started making a few changes in 2014-15.

Kormend signed Lemon for the season of 2014-15. After appearing for 12 seasons, on December 23, 2014, he left the team.

Crailsherim Merlins (2015)

After leaving Körmend in 2014, he signed with Crailsheim Merlins of Germany on February 6, 2015. Before joining Crailsherim Merlins, Walt played six games for Kormend in the EuroChallenge. He appeared with Crailsherim Merlins for eight games and had an average score of 6.4 points.

Forth Wayne Mad Ants (2015-16)

In 2015-16 and 2017-18, he signed with Forth Wayne Mad Ants, scoring an average of 17.6 points.

İstanbulspor Beylikdüzü (2016)

He signed with İstanbulspor Beylikdüzü for the Turkish Basketball First League in July 2016.

Rethymno Cretan Kings (2017)

Lemon signed with a Greek team called Rethymno Cretan Kings in February 2017.

Forth Wayne Mad Ants (2017-18)

After playing overseas, Lemon returned home and signed again with Mad Ants in 2017-18. He had outshined all the other players. He scored an average of 22.4 points, making him G League’s leading scorer. Eventually, this earned his first NBA debut to New Orleans Pelicans.

New Orleans Pelicans (2018)

In February 2018, New Orleans Pelicans announced that the team had signed a 10-day contract with Lemon. And thus, on February 23, 2018, Lemon made his NBA debut with New Orleans Pelicans. In March 2018, Lemon signed his second 10-day contract with the team.

Maine Red Claws & Boston Celtics (2018)

In 2018, Boston Celtics signed a two-way contract with Lemon. Boston Celtics own Maine Red Claws. According to the agreement, he would share his time with Maine Red Claws and Boston Celtics. The Celtics later waived Lemon on November 29 without appearing for Maine Red Claws.

Furthermore, the reason why Lemon was waived from the Boston Celtics is not made clear even today.

Windy City Bulls (2018-19)

Windy City Bulls signed Lemon in 2018. He split his time between Maine Red Claws and Windy City Bulls. During his time in between these two, he scored an average of 20.9 points.

It is affiliated with Chicago’s G League. He appeared for 33 games with Windy City Bulls.

Since Lemon’s addition to Windy City Bulls, the team won eight games straight.

Indiana Pacers (2019)

Lemon was signed with Indiana Pacers in 2019 for less than a week. But he was waived along with Amida Brimah and C.J.Wilcox

Besides, they were on non-guaranteed contracts; the teams did not have to pay money as compensation.

Chicago Bulls (2019)

In 2019, Chicago Bulls announced that it had signed with Lemon for the NBA contract. However, the terms of the agreement, according to their policy, were not made public. On March 29, 2019, he made his debut with Chicago Bulls and scored 19 points. He says he was thrilled to sign with the bulls, representing his hometown.

Lemon made his appearance for the Bulls’ six games and scored his career-high against the Wizards in 2019. 

Press conferences were not held when the Bulls signed Lemon. Furthermore, there weren’t any news highlights. Social media did not go crazy, but this does not mean it was insignificant. 

His first game with the Bulls left everybody in awe. But most importantly, what makes him a great point guard is his ability to ball handling. The determination to score even during the tight spaces deserves some more recognition than he deserves.

Forth Wayne Mad Ants (2019-20)

Lemon returned for the third season with Forth Wayne in 2019. He is the eighth leading scorer with 1,528 points. Since his first season in 2015-16, Lemon has appeared in 97 games with Mad Ants. 

Besides his dedication and love for basketball, Lemon is one of the success stories of Mad Ants.  

Lemon missed several games in G League, yet he was described as one of the season’s most productive players. As after his return to the game, his field goal attempts were 64.3 percent. 

Hapoel Tel Aviv (2020- present)

In August 2020, Hapoel Tel Aviv announced that Lemon had signed with them. The details of this contract are unknown.
