At the University of Alabama, Williams studied under Mark Gottfried. As a freshman in 2002, he started every game as a point guard. He averaged 10.4 points and 4.5 assists in each game.

Williams and the Crimson Tide were seeded second in the NCAA tournament and lost to Kent State 71–58 in the 2nd round.

Professional Career 

Williams spent four seasons with the Cavaliers during his 13-year NBA career, which lasted from 2003 to 2016.

He played for the Cavaliers from 2008 to 2011 and then rejoined the team in 2015 to help Cleveland win the NBA Championship in 2015-16.

Williams appeared in 13 NBA Playoff games in 2015-16, averaging 20 points, six rebounds, and three assists in 68 minutes.

Mo Williams: Injury

Williams was excused from the team’s game in Dallas on January 12, 2015, to attend to a personal matter.

He began seeing more minutes in early February, but due to swelling in his left knee after being diagnosed with chondromalacia, he only played in one game between February 18 and March 24.

On March 26, he returned to the lineup, scoring eight points in 13 minutes off the bench against the New York Knicks.

In early April, he began to experience discomfort and increased soreness in his left knee, forcing him to miss more time. Williams saw limited action during the Cavaliers’ 2016 playoff run, which saw them reach the NBA Finals with a 12–2 record.

Williams did not return to the team for the 2016–17 season, and he had surgery on his left knee in October of that year.

Mo Williams: Retirement 

Mo exercised his player option with the Cavaliers for the 2016–17 season on June 14, 2016, just before the end of the 2016 NBA Finals.

Williams had stated that the 2016–17 season would be his final, but he announced his retirement from the NBA on September 26, 2016. However, he never signed his retirement papers and remained on the Cavaliers’ roster.

The most difficult time of Williams’ career had been not being a rotation player in 2015–16, and while the exit of Matthew Dellavedova in the 2016 off-season established a spot at point guard, the Cavaliers drafted Kay Felder in the 2016 draft.

Williams’ playing career was effectively ended when he was named an assistant coach for the Cal State Northridge Matadors men’s basketball team in May 2018.

The athlete was named head coach of the Alabama State Hornets basketball team in May 2020.

Furthermore, according to the Clarion-Ledger, former NBA basketball player will take over the collegiate men’s basketball team at Jackson State University.

Williams is the second former professional athlete to assume the role of head coach.
