1) Aaron Rodgers’s Season-Ending Injury
The 2023 season for New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers came to an abrupt halt before it could gain any momentum.
During the Jets’ opening game, Rodgers suffered a devastating injury on just his fourth play.
Head coach Robert Saleh revealed to reporters that after the Jets secured a thrilling 22-16 overtime victory against the Buffalo Bills, there were concerns that the four-time NFL MVP may have torn his Achilles tendon.
Unfortunately, the injury has been confirmed as season-ending for Rodgers.
The unfortunate incident occurred during the Jets’ first drive on Monday night when Rodgers was injured and required assistance from the team’s trainers.
Following a visit to the medical tent, he was subsequently transported to the locker room.
Initially, he was listed as questionable to return due to an ankle injury, but his status was later downgraded to out.
The Jets also provided an update, stating that X-rays had returned negative results.
2) Joe Burrow’s Contract Blows Away All Prior Quarterback Contracts
The primary metric for comparing player contracts is the “new-money” average, which provides insight into the value of the deal.
In the case of Bengals Joe Burrow, his new-money average of $55 million surpasses the previous record set earlier this year by Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert at $52.5 million.
What sets Burrow’s contract apart from others is the impressive new-money average and the substantial injury guarantee at signing, which stands at a remarkable $219 million.
To put this in perspective, it’s significantly higher than the injury guarantees of other prominent quarterbacks:
- Burrow’s injury guarantee exceeds Cowboys Dak Prescott‘s by $93 million.
- It surpasses Chiefs Patrick Mahomes‘ by $77.528 million.
- It outpaces Bills’ Josh Allen’s by $69 million.
- It’s $59 million more than Cardinals Kyler Murray‘s.
- It stands at $39 million higher than Hurts‘.
- It’s even $25.27 million more than Herbert‘s injury guarantee.

Highest And Lowest Paid NFL Mascots
In the NFL, mascots have the potential to earn a salary of up to $60,000 per year.
One standout example is Rowdy, the mascot of the Dallas Cowboys, who earns an impressive annual salary of $65,000.
Pat Patriot, the mascot for the New England Patriots, also commands the same substantial salary, with both mascots pocketing an hourly rate of $50.
Sourdough Sam from the San Francisco 49ers ranks third in terms of earnings, with an annual income of $60,000 and an hourly wage of $45.
However, not every NFL team has a mascot. Among the 32 teams, five do not feature a mascot.
As for the lowest-paid NFL mascots, there isn’t a single mascot at the bottom of the pay scale, but a few earn no more than $50,000 per season. This group includes Blitz from the Seattle Seahawks and Sir Purr from the Carolina Panthers.
3) Giants’ CB Amani Oruwariye OK After Being Carted Off Practice Field
Amani Oruwariye, a cornerback and New York Giants practice squad member endured a frightening incident during practice on Wednesday.
He was reportedly carted off the practice field on a backboard and transported to a local hospital via ambulance.
Witnesses at the scene noted that Oruwariye was observed moving his arms as he was being taken away. The ambulance, with its emergency lights flashing, swiftly departed the facility.
The incident occurred during kickoff drills, where Oruwariye was involved in a collision that left him on the ground for an extended period before being carefully removed from the field.
Amani Oruwariye, aged 27, took to social media to provide reassurance about his condition following the incident.
Oruwariye has been in the NFL for five seasons, with four years as part of the Detroit Lions. During this time, he participated in 53 games and started in 36 of them.
4) Brady Christensen Placed On Injured Reserve
The Carolina Panthers have decided to place left guard Brady Christensen on injured reserve due to a biceps injury.
Head coach Frank Reich provided insight into the injury, stating that Christensen sustained it late in the game against Atlanta.
Adding to their challenge, the Panthers are already without starting guard Austin Corbett, who suffered an ACL tear during the previous season’s final game against the New Orleans Saints.
In the season opener, rookie Chandler Zavala performed admirably as Corbett’s replacement.
Reich noted that they have several potential replacements within the existing roster, mentioning Cade Mays, Nash Jensen, and Justin McCray.
He didn’t explicitly mention pursuing free agents or players from other teams’ practice squads. However, he discussed possibly bringing in another cornerback while addressing Jaycee Horn’s injury separately.
5) Tua Tagovailoa Named AFC Offensive Player of the Week
The NFL announced that Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has earned the AFC Offensive Player of the Week honors for his outstanding performance in Week One against the Los Angeles Chargers.
This marks Tua‘s second time securing the Player of the Week award in his budding NFL career.
The previous instance occurred in 2022 when the Dolphins staged an impressive come-from-behind victory over the Baltimore Ravens, securing a 42-38 win.
In Sunday’s triumphant game, Tagovailoa showcased his skills by completing 28 out of 45 passes for a whopping 466 yards, delivering three touchdowns and, regrettably, an interception.
Notably, his 466 passing yards ranked as the fifth-highest single-game total in the Miami Dolphins’ history.
Even more crucially, he consistently delivered clutch throws when his team needed them the most.
It was undoubtedly a remarkable start to the season, and Tua’s well-deserved recognition as AFC Offensive Player of the Week solidifies his exceptional performance.
6) Steelers WR Diontae Johnson Might Not Return Until After Week 6 Bye
Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Diontae Johnson’s injury timeline has been clarified further; unfortunately, it’s not favorable news.
Johnson is anticipated to be sidelined for approximately four weeks due to a hamstring injury he sustained in Week 1, as reported by Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
The projected four-week absence aligns with the team’s Week 6 bye, which implies that we may not see him return until after the bye week.
The Steelers are scheduled to face the Los Angeles Rams in Week 7 following their bye.
In Week 1, Diontae Johnson was heavily involved in the offense, receiving six targets during his 27 offensive snaps, and he managed to secure three of those targets for a total of 48 receiving yards.
The hamstring injury occurred during a notable catch-and-run play that covered 26 yards, showcasing one of the team’s more impressive offensive moments of the day.
7) Michigan State Head Coach Mel Tucker Suspended
Michigan State University suspended its football head coach, Mel Tucker, on Sunday following allegations of his involvement in sexual misconduct.
This development marks another addition to the university’s ongoing issues related to the handling of sexual assault and harassment cases, putting the institution in the national spotlight once again.
Michigan State University’s struggles in dealing with sexual assault and harassment came to public attention with the Larry Nassar case.
Nassar, a former MSU sports medicine doctor, was found to have sexually abused hundreds of women while masquerading under the guise of providing medical treatment.
In the aftermath of the Nassar scandal, the university faced criticism regarding its Title IX process and encountered several high-profile cases of sexual misconduct.
The recent allegations against Coach Tucker are situated within this broader context, causing concern and raising questions among campus community members.
